anyone had turbinate reduction surgery and not experience Empty Nose Syndrome?
I have been bothered by nasal breathing with my mask and frequently get awakened from excessive congestion.  My ENT recommended Septoplasty and Turbinate Reduction .  I am considering ONLY Turbinate reduction procedure yet I am scared to DEATH of the Empty Nose Syndrome that can happen as a result of the procedure.   Has anyone had ONLY Turbinate Reduction surgery and NOT experienced Empty Nose syndrome.  I would be interested to know your experience.  Thank you.

Hopefully someone responds.  In the meantime, in case you haven't read it, here's some folks' experience:

I'm not a surgeon, etc. but empty nose syndrome is very uncommon, as I understand, and it's primarily has to do with removing too much of the inferior nasal turbinate.

I had both surgeries and have not had any symptoms of empty nose syndrome.  Better breathing during the day, easier to tolerate pap/vent therapy, and less congestion is what I have personally experienced.

"Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is a clinical syndrome, the hallmark symptom of which is a sensation of suffocation despite a clear airway.

ENS patients may experience a range of symptoms. Commonly reported are feelings of nasal obstruction, nasal dryness and crusting, and a sensation of being unable to breathe.

The overall incidence of ENS is unknown due to the small body of epidemiological study and the lack of a dedicated International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) code, which would allow incidence reporting of the syndrome. "

My ENT had a lot of experience doing this particular surgery (and other surgeries).  That factored into my decision also.

I recently had septoplasty and turbinate reduction. I have never heard of empty nose syndrome. I now have a roomy nose, which gives me quality of life: this doesn’t mean it is any kind of empty. Ask your ENT what the percentage of empty noses there are from turbinate reduction.
