Battery Backup

RE: Battery Backup
Backup "genny" is short for "backup generator" or electrical generator for backup purposes. They are usually a gasoline or diesel engine combined with a generator to provide emergency power.

See here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine-generator

They can be purchased at varying costs ($200 - $800 for a basic home version or more for sets that offering more features and more power, etc.)

RE: Battery Backup
Not trying to hijack your thread, I ordered the ResMed PSII Saturday. I know, highway robbery! I had some FSA funds left from 2013 to use or I would loose it after the 15th. I hope it works well for my camping during hunting season in the fall. I'll let you know how the "bar of gold" works.

Am sorry - correctly stated above. In my area, sags or drops are a bigger issue then failures. A failure around here tends to be 12+ hours to days long if/when they happen. Sags/drops last only seconds usually. Just know (as stated above) not all battery backups are the same! Get a good one, or don't bother is my thinking.

Please do Joe, good grief man 500+, they are raking it in on that purchase, almost upsets me that they are charging that much, not cool. Regardless, the main thing I want though is not the battery function per say (albeit good to have), but if my lights go out b/c of the weather, it will work like a UPS.

Either way, let me know if you are happy with it.

thanks

Yeah, if I was rich I would get one of those natural gas generators, forget the manufacture. Definitely need a generator though. Thanks for the reply.

RE: Battery Backup
I ended up buying a UPS: Tripp Lite SMART1500LCDT 1500VA 900W UPS Smart LCD Battery Back Up Tower AVR 120V USB Coax RJ45

About $162 at my door.

We already had two of these, one for the servers and another for the big screen TV and media PC.

According to the readouts on it, it will likely last about 2+ hours when the power fails.

It shows no load with the machine running until I breath and then you can watch the breaths as it varies between 0 and 9%, and about 120-140 minutes expected battery life. (I might last longer but I am figuring the 2 hours is pretty close to what can be expected.)

This won't work for anyone remote from the electric grid, nor for extended outages, but even a 5 minute battery would cover 99% of all outages here, and this is going to cover all but one or so a year, maybe better.

RE: Battery Backup
I spent bout $700 bucks a few years back when we lost power for like 4-6 days. It'll do 3500 watts and the seven gallon tank will run my normal load for about 12hrs before needing refilling. It'll run the freezer and fridge, a room A/C, CPAPs, a couple of lights, and one TV & Bluray player easily.

Of course, I haven't needed it once in the last 2-3 years Smile

No.

ResMed S9 machines do fine on "modified sine wave" or "stepped approximation" (same thing) supplies, according to ResMed.

The humidifiers on ResMed S8 machines will be damaged by MSW voltages, but the blower unit will be OK.

Respironics doesn't say, but I'd expect PRS1 machines to be fine, but M series may or may not be OK, and the "legacy" CPAP humidifiers are probably bad, too.

You're probably OK if the machine, including the humidifier, runs off of a single cord from an external power brick.

I'll agree that most computer UPS's won't run a CPAP for very long with a power outage. You need to understand the internal details on run time for the machine. They usually advertise "VA" rating, which tells you nothing in terms of run time.

"Pure" sine wave units are often very inefficient, although they're getting better. They tend to be especially inefficient for low power loads. A CPAP tends to draw a low power level, but you need it to run all night. Most UPS's are intended to run a computer long enough for you to save your data and shut down if there's a power outage.

RE: Battery Backup
Well, if it is going to get damaged, better to let it get damaged now while it is a rental. Smile

Also, for those who do buy a UPS, remember to turn off you Power Loss ALARM (unless you want to be awakened for power outages.

It was very easy to do this on the front panel button and display of the Tripp Lite.

Maybe one night soon, I will turn off the power to the Tripp Lite at bedtime and see how long the S9/H5i will last. Smile
