I realize I may be off subject but I'm thinking about using an old CPAP full face mask when I go out to pick up groceries this afternoon.  I also think I'll include the small right-angle one-way flapper valve plugged into the mask.  Perhaps I should include a section of CPAP hose (I have some old hose) to locate the air inlet in another direction, perhaps behind me.  I don't have any N95 material, only cloth, that I could locate over the inlet to minimize solids, droplets, etc., from entering my breathing air.  Other than the small air exhaust hole on the right-angle flapper valve, there should be little chance of airborne crud getting through the mask and into me.

Somebody else also came up with this suggestion earlier in this thread but I didn't see any subsequent discussion about the idea (I've tried to read all postings -- difficult at times -- very, very helpful!).

Another off the subject thought:  Has anybody heard anything regarding mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, house flies being able to transfer the COVID-19 virus?  If so, I think many of us are doomed.  Note that mosquitoes can transfer the West Nile virus, so why not coronavirus?

Full face masks have an anti-asphixiation valve. It sounds like you may already know this based on your reference to a "flapper valve", but just in case I'd note that when there is no positive pressure from the machine, the anti-asphixiation valve opens up and vents the mask completely to room air, both in and out. Air will not be sucked through the tube. So with an unmodified full face CPAP mask there is no point to attaching a tube if you aren't using a PAP to blow air into it. And you wouldn't want to. Normally your CO washes out the regular vent and doesn't go down the tube because of the positive pressure. But if you attach a tube with no CPAP and force the anti-asphyxiation valve closed you will be breathing out into a dead space which will cause you to breath more CO2.

You can use that material from new ;-)  bags for Your vacuum cleaner instead of N95. Some of them are HEPA certified/approved. Advantage: minimum air resisance! For me it seems to be ideal for creating DYI facemasks, if nothing other is available

Ein individueller 3D-Druck von Privatleuten ist nicht mehr erforderlich. Auch ein Unternehmen, welches große Stückzahlen 3D-gedruckt liefern kann, ist eingebunden.

Derzeit sind wir damit beschäftigt, mit Unternehmen aus der Region eine erste Fertigung aufzubauen. Dies und die Ausarbeitung der Dokumentation unserer Entwicklung nehmen uns so sehr in Beschlag, dass wir leider im Moment nicht in der Lage sind, auf Anfragen individuell zu antworten. Sollten wir in Zukunft Unterstützung gebrauchen (z.B. CPAP-Geräte, etc.), kommen wir gerne auf Sie zurück. Nach Abschluss der Dokumentation, werden alle Dateien öffentlich gemacht.

Another problem that is appearing here is the hospitals are struggling to dope and a doctor here told me that if you are involved in an accident, I.E. fall off a ladder, break a leg, wrist or a traffic accident you will not get the usual care as you are used to. They will patch people up and send them home, but they are struggling for beds and doctors as well as nurses. So if you are involved in an accident, you will be patched up, pumped full of morphine and sat on a chair in the corner in the hope that someone might get time to sort you out. However, you are going to be sent home with the minimum of treatment. No plastic surgery or pretty stitching and cosmetic work. They have a quarter of the doctors and nurses off, self isolating or ill with the virus. It will come to you as well, it has not even reached its peak here, so it is going to get worse here.
We are turning big buildings into temporary hospitals for people that has the virus but does not need ventilation and turning ice rinks into temporary storage for the dead. So far most have not been used, but we are prepared for to use them. The death totals are rocketing up and it is a bit alarming. There are more people out walking here than there is normally, this is just being silly, they are not staying away from each other and the panic buying is really stupid. A lot of the food that has been bought is ending up in the bin. What is the point of that?

Anyway, you lot all take care and if you do get the bug and find it difficult to breath, get to hospital.
The CPAP will not help if you need to be fed with oxygen and need medicine to clear your lungs of fluid that builds up.
Otherwise, you do not want to go to a hospital unless you really have to with any other problem.

I don't have a reference but the question has been presented to virologists and infectious disease specialists in a number of interviews and the answer is consistently that there is no scientific evidence that it can be spread by mosquitoes or other insects.
