You sound like you're getting to a better place with everything Dawn -- I'm really glad. You've been through a lot.

Since you're starting to feel like there's finally an explanation for what you've been experiencing I'm hoping you'll be able to relax more, and as a result get a little more and better sleep with the machine. Smile

Dawn, have a look at the supplier list (there's a link at the top of the page). Supplier No 2 specialises in "gently used" machines and seems to have a good reputation.

I am in a better place mentally, but still really struggling with getting sleep. I only slept about 3 hours last night. Only 1 1/2 hrs of that with the machine. I just couldn't fall asleep, and I would keep waking up. I hope that this gets better. Without sleep I am just going to continue to decline cognitively. Add to that the sleep apnea and now the acidosis...not a good outcome. I have to figure something out!!

What do you do when you wake up after you have gone to bed? Do you get up? Do you read? Do you watch tv? Do you get on the internet and come to the forum? Tell us your routine when you go to bed and then what you do every time you wake up. We can help you better with that info.

You need to sort that. The P10 straps are supposed to be stretchable - so give them a bit of a stretch. I have been using nasal pillows for several years and the first thing the made them work for me was loosening the straps until they just held the pillows in position, and no tighter-, granted that was on a Swift FX. On my P10 I just dropped the back strap way down low (just above my neck) and it seemed to give the right pressure. It should not, never, be mashed into your nose. Also use the largest pillows you can, that do not give air leaks. i.e. if they are too small they will protrude too far into the nose, and hurt like crazy. If you cannot adjust it, then swap masks asap. I love pillows in general and my P10 in particular and consider it a great pain when I have to use a nasal, or full face mask due to a cold. But, if you cannot make them work for you, there is no shame - finding the style and brand of mask that will suit you is harder than it looks, as it attested by the number of threads on that topic.

When I wake up I usually just toss and turn. I don't get up out of bed. If I can't go back to sleep after an hour or so I usually get on the forum or other sites online. I haven't tried watching tv or reading.

My nights generally consist of this:
I notice I start to get really sleepy sometimes around 11pm or so, but I have a lot of things that seem to take precedence (watching tv, getting online, cleaning kitchen etc) over going to bed, and I'm used to being a night owl. After I do these things I am no longer sleepy, and end up staying up until 3-4am every night. I know your probably going to tell me to go to bed when I'm tired at 11pm. Its just so hard because of the distractions! I need to find a way to adjust my schedule because the way it goes right now I go to bed at 3-4am, sleep maybe 3-4 hours with frequent wakings, and then end up in bed all day until 1pm or so still not getting any sleep.

I know the answer to my insomnia is probably just going to bed earlier, but I still have the issue with waking up frequently. I appreciate anything you can share with me..good or bad. I need to get this under control now!!

Thank you for the suggestions. I will try adjusting the straps and pillows and see how that works.

I will write more later but when youwake up stay off the internet and dont watch tv. I want to look for some links that will explain why. In the meantime read a book that isnt drama filled. Drink caffeine free tea (chamomile I heard is good)

Insomnia is a mongrel. My wife suffers from that, on and off.
I assume you have a sleep therapist, with your apnea?
What is their take on it?
Do drugs (sleeping pills) work for you? Your body could just be in the habit of frequently waking up so the apnea didn't kill you, and now you have the cpap it needs a little help to break the habit. I know 2 or 3 nights on the pills for my wife will give her up to 2 weeks good sleep.

I set an alarm on my phone for 30 minutes before my snoozy time, so that I am in bed, teeth cleaned etc ready for when the body clock says go to sleep.
You could try that so the "last minute chores" are done and you are settling down - make a list "for tomorrow" instead of doing them late at night - that is another trick I learnt so I could relax leaving them undone, as then my brain doesn't keep running through the litany of what I must remember for tomorrow.

Hi Alby,
Yes, my neurologist is a sleep specialist. At our last visit in June he wanted me to try melatonin for the insomnia. I've tried it and it really does nothing for me except make me groggy the next day, as do other sleeping pills. I have an appointment with him on the 29th, so hopefully he has some other options for me.

That is definitely possibility that my body developed this insomnia as a defense mechanism. It will take some more time on cpap to determine though if that if that is the case.

Good idea about the alarm on your phone to remind you to get ready for your nightly bedtime routine. I imagine this lets your body know its time to calm down and get some sleep. Yes, I do need to learn to put things off for the next day.
