I was initially pleased with my new “DreamStation” machine but then after about one week I suddenly awoke in the muddle of the night, unable to exhale against very high air pressure. I took the machine back to my CPAP provider. The technician evaluated the data chip and said that everything appeared normal, and that I just needed to get accustomed to the new machine. Over the next two days I continued to experience extreme random pressures changes that would not allow me to sleep. I would awake with a torrent of airflow so strong that it would not allow me to exhale. I would remove the mask for the rest of the night. I again took the mask back and the technician and she said that I was the problem and that I should see my doctor, for which I did. My doctor wants a two week review of the data chip.
The technician then set the machine to a “Fixed” setting of air pressure. That night the machine initially worked fine but later it continued to have the same problems. I do not use the “Ramp Mode”.
I took the machine back again and the technician made more adjustments. That night my wife tried to wake me at about 1 AM when she noticed that I was not breathing so she ripped my mask-off. She said that I was totally unconciousness, still not breathing, and appeared to be synodic. After I regained consciousness, I then put the mask back on to test what was going-on. I could not exhale at all as the machine would block any out flow of air from the mask but it produced a high constant volume of air from the machine. It was like there was a one-way check valve that allowed air to flow in only one direction, that is from the machine to the mask but not out of the mask. Again, I took the machine back and the technician made more adjustments. That night the machine worked ok but about 3 AM the flow of air from the machine became nil and this made be remove the mask just to be able to get enough air into my lings.
I was given a second machine and now, after only three days, I am having the same problems. Frustrated, what should I do next?
