Mouth starting to open
I have been on cpap with pillow for two plus years. Very successful. Recently mouth starting to blow open a little. Any tricks to keep lips together better? I know there are joke opportunities in there, but seriously... Don't really want to have to go to full mask yet. Thanks. Brand new to board.

Hi PBMack,
WELCOME! to the forum.! You might trya chinstrap to see if that will help you keep your mouth closed. Much success to you as you continue your CPAP therapy

I agree with trish: The best way to keep your mouth closed is with a chin strap.
BTW, PBMack, do us a small favor of completing your profile so that we can provide better, more specific information, pertaining to the equipment you are using.

RE: Mouth starting to open
Had the same problem...so began with a chin strap...found it too cumbersome. Decided to try taping ...and that's the answer for me. I buy 3" 3M Micropore surgical tape....cut a length 4-5"...turn over both ends about 1/8 inch for easy removal. I purse my lips ...tape from above upper lip to under the chin. At the same time I began training my tongue to stay at the top of my mouth with the tip just behind the front teeth.
Six months in ....I now cut the tape into strips about 1" wide and tape just the middle of my lips vertically...this is just enough to remind my mouth to stay closed...still remembering to position the tongue correctly. This procedure has really worked for me... I just saw my respiratory technologist today who reports no mouth leaks in my data. Good luck !

When I started with xPAP I had heard about doing this and started it right away. Now it's second nature to me, as soon as I put the mask on my tongue goes right behind my front teeth and stays there. If you do it right, it positions the back of your tongue so that you won't be able to breath through your mouth at all. I don't know if it stays like that all night long but in my case it's cut down on mouth breathing substantially. Give it a shot! |
