Nervous about Central Apneas

Nervous about Central Apneas
Hi everyone,

This is my first post on this forum, and I created an account to get some advice since my sleep doctor is incredibly hard to reach.

In November, I did an in-lab sleep study (results attached) which showed an AHI of 25 and RDI of 27. The study showed I had only Central Apneas, Hypopneas (unspecified), and RERAs. However, I was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea despite having 0 obstructive events. Thus, I received a Resmed Airsense 10 about 10 days ago, and have been struggling immensely with it. My Oscar results show only CAs and Hs, just like my sleep study.

I'm wondering if I was misdiagnosed? It's got me feeling a bit anxious because the underlying causes of Central Sleep Apnea are pretty alarming. Any chance someone could shed some light on what's going on / offer a little encouragement?

Grateful

RE: Nervous about Central Apneas
Welcome to the forum.

Hypopneas are obstructive and your CAI was less than 5 which eliminates a Central Apnea diagnosis. Your diagnosis is correct.
Your sleep study showed a CAI of 3.54 and OSCAR is showing a CAI of 3.83 so for all practical purposes no change which is good.
Your APAP is programmed to ignore central apnea.

You were awake until about 1:15 and all of your central occurred in that period so we call those SWJ or Sleep Wake Junk. Most likely those "centrals" are the result of you tossing and trying to settle in and in the process, holding your breath. I'd have to see a 3 minute view of your breathing to confirm but your tidal volume says you were awake. Assuming I'm correct these centrals are nothing to be concerned about.
