Odds of getting CA from CPAP?
Hi,
I'm new to OSA. My at home sleep study resulted in AHI of 17, so barely moderate. I bought a Resmed Airsense 11 and have been using it for a few days. I have adapted to it and feel better already! I have the Airmini for when I travel, which is often, but haven't used it yet. I did some research and have seen were central apnea can develop from using CPAP (about 10%?). Is this true? If so, are their predictors or ways to avoid CA? I ask because my job allows OSA with use of CPAP, but CA is disqualifying.
Thanks!

RE: Odds of getting CA from CPAP?
Medically CA < 5 is considered not having it.
There is no predictor, only action of it happens. Typically with no CA on a diagnostic test it is fairly easy to manipulate to LT 5, if not we would direct you to a new machine (ASV) which typically lowers it to zero with very low OSA as well.
FYI the typical cause is flushing too much CO2 from your system.
What is the limit in your case and specifically who is doing the monitoring.
I understand if it is Neuro muscular but that would show up on your diagnostic test.
RE: Odds of getting CA from CPAP?
Thanks for the response.
Currently, nobody is doing the monitoring. I just started on CPAP this week. I asked about CA because if it happens it could affect my employment. My sleep study did not indicate I had it but I have heard of its onset in some instances.
How is too much CO2 flushed from the body? High pressure?
RE: Odds of getting CA from CPAP?
In general CA is considered to be caused by some kind of brain malfunction.
Think Brain injury, stroke, various medications and other things.
Neuro muscular issues where your muscles used for breathing are not working properly.
TECA is the least concerning of all of them.
Howuch flushing is too much? Enough so it results in excessive CA events. This is typically described as over 5 central events per hour.
Sorry, I know that is vague.
If we see CA events happening we take a serious look at them.
Post your OSCAR Daily charts and then we can see what is going on.
RE: Odds of getting CA from CPAP?
Thank you for the answers!
I'm not worried about it at the moment. I am just trying to learn if there is anything that can cause CA when using CPAP.
I'll start using OSCAR this week.
