Passive (cold) humidifier (battery) question. Trop storm coming.

Passive (cold) humidifier (battery) question. Trop storm coming.
Hi, we are in the path of a tropical storm, and if the power goes out, going to switch over to my 97 AH gel marine batteries (I have two, just in case.)

I have been told not to run the heated tube and humidifier (which stinks) but I will not run it. Can I still put water into the humidifier, and just shut the humidifier and heated tube off and run it in "passive" mode? I figure it might be better than totally dry. Oh how I dislike the dry mouth thing. Icky. I still sometimes get it even with my humidifier on 4.

Thank you.

Yes, you can.

Also, it's not that you cannot run the humidifier and heated hose; it's a matter of power consumption.
You will get more run time with the humidifier and heated hose off. Thing is: One never knows how long one might be without power in storm conditions.

Do you have a secondary charging system like a generator?
(I know, wonderful to go outside to start a generator in driving rain.)

If it is pouring rain, the moisture in the air around you will help.

You could take off the heated hose, that will help with power drain. But what you could do, before the storm gets there, is spend a night with your usual set up and see what happens to the battery. Try one night normal, one night without the hose, and a 3rd night with the passive set up.

I do the passive/passover humidifier method quite often during the spring.

you could also try the Heat Moisture Exchange modules - they require no power and provide some heat and moisture back to the inhale from the exhaled air. I have some I found to try next time the power goes out, but I cannot comment yet whther or not I like em.

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum

Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

During a tropical storm the humidity is going to be high anyway. May not need the heated humidifier.

You could also use Ocean nasal spray and Biotene mouth rinse before going to bed. They help!

This link takes you to a discusson on running Resmed machines on DC power http://www.resmed.com/us/dam/documents/a...lo_eng.pdf

Using an AC Inverter, your S10 ASV with humidifier is not included in the tables, but a S9 Adapt used 7.28 amps (95th percentile) at 5.0 cm H20 EPAP with humidifier at 30 degrees C.

With a 12-DC/24-DC converter, your machine uses 0.61 amps without the humidifier, and 2.45 amps with the humidifier.

Assuming you use 50% of the battery capacity, your 97 amp-hour batteries are good for 19.8 hours each with the humidifier, or 79 hours each with the VPAP alone. That is a month.

I assume you're using a 12-DC/24-DC converter rather than an AC inverter? If so, it's a safe bet you'll get the power back in plenty of time to splurge and use the humidifier. Hope this helps.
