Question about turning machine off or unplug from wall

I have a ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet, which is a small computer.  I protect mine as such and have power protection for this APAP.

It is really very inexpensive.   I have both time out protection and surge protection.  My APAP treatment is too important to me to lose my very expensive machine to power surges or a storm of some kind causing on/off/on/off pulsing and thus frying my APAP.

In the morning I push the on/off switch on the top of my unit to turn it off.

So, from the wall plug

1. to my timeout protection
   

     2. to the surge suppress (3,000 joules)
     3. to my APAP machine. 
The timeout protection isn't much bigger than a plug in the wall lamp timer and plugs directly into the wall plug.

I just realized you are in Australia, so you will have to look around for a time out device for your power needs.

I'm of the sort that the switch on top is good enough to turn the machine off and on. Early on, I did switch off the power strip for a moment to cancel the cool down. That lasted less than a week.

OK, so imagine you do the switching off the power strip, and that night you'll climb into bed exhausted. You get your mask on and click, the machine fails to start. Then it dawns on you, of course the power strip is off. Which is six and a half feet away. Why six and half feet Dave? Because your hose is six feet!

Mask off, climb out of bed and kick the thing that's always in the way, then turn on your power strip. Turn around and step into the thing that's in the way again. Limp back in bed and mask on again. Power on the CPAP and pass out.

Yeah OK that's why you did it, so you'd intentionally pass out. And yes I'm aware you can disconnect the hose from the mask, but it was funner to have it the other way and it was my story.

When we build our house, we had the electric company install a whole -house surge protector right at the meter. Then on the computers we use uninterruptible power supply units to smooth out the current and give us time to shut down the machines properly. I suppose they units could be hooked up to a pap device also. Hmmm, I just remembered that years ago I had a cpap that had its own battery built in so you always had power when the power went out!

It's not in my DNA to waste energy. The Airsense 10 has a built in Power saving mode (sleep mode) where it consumes less current, and probably increases the longevity of the machine. It does not turn off the modem so data is still transferred. It just shuts down unneeded circuity thus saving power consumption - like turning lights off when you exit a room  

I called Resmed about the recommended procedure for shut down. It was explained to me that the single push of the start/stop button puts the machine in standby which is used for stopping the machine for brief periods. The 3 second push of the start/stop button puts the machine in power saving mode and is recommended when the machine won't be used for longer periods. A single push of the button cancels the Power Saving mode. Don't unplug the machine.

Sure, you can ignore using the power saving mode, and it won't hurt a thing. That's your call. However, for me personally I always try do my part in saving energy where I can. "Turn the lights off".....

Also, if I recall correctly the Airsense's cellular model waits until about an hour after you stop using it in the morning to transmit its report. If it's unplugged... that's not gonna happen.

You make a very good point.  Turning off the power stops the cellphone connection.
A person who depends on ResMed's MyAir program for feedback won't get it if the unit is completely unpowered.

I have had to wait as long as an hour and a half for the MyAir program to give feedback.  This is a wonderful program, especially if you are traveling around the country and do not have access to your home computer for ResScan or OSCAR.

Turning off the machine by the button on the top of the machine does not prevent this cellphone function since there is still power to the machine.

The My Air program just makes you feel good. If you go into the clinical menu and set essentials to plus the enhanced sleep report on the machine shows you more information than my air and its instant, just make sure you set the period to 1 day as it defaults to a 30 day average.

This is a good idea.  And you make an excellent point about it being instant.

Anyway, back to the topic of unplugging, I'd be more likely to hold the power button to enter power save mode. Not that I've done it, but it's more likely to happen than unplugging.

How do you set the period to 1 day? I already have the essentials set to plus, but don't see where I can set the period.
