Thank you very much! I was thinking what a pain it was going to be to run that command every single time I read my SD card and now you have helped me solve that problem! I think someone should inform the Physician offices about this problem too...

The reason why windows can write a “Locked” SD card is because the lock does not actually write protect the device.
The switch obstructs a mechanical switch mounted on the socket. Usually the state of this switch is checked when a card is inserted and the OS controls the read/write state. The OS is also able to ignore this for its own purposes.
The write protect is functionally a lot like a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk
