Rx for Bipap machine

My sleep study results indicated Obstructive Sleep Apnea and recommended a Bipap machine set at 16/10 cmH2O with Resmed nasal pillows. My primary care physician is reluctant to prescribe a machine based on these recommendations. He states a Bipap machine is typically used in the hospital and never for home care. We have been going back and forth on this for months. 

Can anyone help me convince my doctor to prescribe this device?

Wow, your doctor needs to get out more! My suggestion is to start looking for another doctor. I don't know if there is any convincing this doctor with a statement that is just plain false.

Get a copy of your sleep study so you can present this to another doctor with the recommendation for a BiLevel.

I went to a pulmonologist because my pcp would not write a script for a vauto. The pulmonologist was even more clueless. He said those are only for people with heart failure. I just got up and left, I was in his exam room less than 5 min. I even took my laptop with Oscar charts, he didn’t care to look at them. He was so arrogant and full of himself.

Your sleep Dr should give you a script for a Bipap. He did the test, he provides the script. That’s
how it works. Just call him up and ask for it.

BPAP or bilevel is any CPAP like machine with 2 distinct pressures. This doctor is clueless. Just having BPAP does not mean hospital use.

Fire and replace, or at least get your help elsewhere.

Some of the consternation may just come down to semantics. Some consider a CPAP machine a ventilator, even though there is little similarity. BIPAP may confuse things as well, as BiLevel is used in describing some CPAP machines. 

You can buy a machine with a prescription from your doc or dentist. You can also just buy it on Facebook marketplace or Craiglist. If your insurance will cover, get a script. Otherwise you can find them very reasonably priced, but make sure it is a real deal not a scam. No prepaying, only use PayPal or cash when you see/test it and not Venmo or Zelle.

Months?! That's absurd. I BiPAP's are typically prescribed for people who, during their sleep study, have difficulty exhaling against the positive pressure coming from the machine. There are other reasons, as well.

Is your PCP the doctor who ordered the sleep study? If so, get him to refer you to a specialist so that you can use your insurance to get the prescribed machine. If not, then get the doctor who ordered the sleep study to prescribe the machine. An alternative would be to get a copy of your sleep study, contact the doctor who evaluated the sleep study data and came to the conclusion that you need a BiPAP to prescribe it for you or refer you to a physician who will.

I can tell you for a fact that I have a bilevel machine (BiPAP is a brand name of a bilevel machine, like kleenex is for tissue) to treat OSA, as does my son.

You can get a prescription from a Dentist, Nurse Practitioner, any sort of Doctor, etc.  And since you are being prescribed a different type of pap machine, your insurance should cover it.  Mine did.  Ask whoever prescribes to specifically request a ResMed AirCurve 10 Vauto, not just a bilevel.  Otherwise, you may end up with an inferior machine.
