[Equipment] Aircurve 10 buzzing like a fly
#1
Aircurve 10 buzzing like a fly
I recently had to begin sleeping in a chair, preparatory to having eye surgery. Rather than move my Resmed S9 from its place inside the night table (with the hose routed out a hole in the left), I figured it would be easier to reprogram my late father's Aircurve 10 Vauto to my settings (I'm at 7.8 CPAP, he was at 16/13 BiPAP) and use that one by my recliner.

It was amazingly silent when I first plugged it in, but in the middle of the night it started buzzing like a fly. The pitch goes up and down as I inhale and exhale, but never stops, and if I hold my breath for a moment it starts going wooza wooza wooza, like it's pulsing. (OK, my S9 does that as well, but not with the noise.)

It sounds to me almost like there's a piece of debris touching the fan blade, or maybe a bearing going out. I've listened to the videos in other threads on here, and it doesn't have that dying cow sound that the humidifier leak makes, more like a fly buzzing around my head. Can't sleep with that racket going on. My mom had to sleep in another room because of it when my dad was alive (although to be fair the oxygen concentrator did drown that out anyway). It annoys me that he could have had that replaced years ago had he only known that the noise is not normal.

I don't know how old this machine is, but if it's only got a two year warranty, my father's been gone for almost exactly two years now (jahrzeit is on the 21st) so it's certainly out of warranty by now.

So: Will Resmed do anything about this, given that it's likely a manufacturing defect? Will they talk to me at all, given that I was not the original user of this machine (although I legally inherited it)? Do I need to pretend to be my dad for a while?

If not, can I fix this myself? I'm pretty handy with tools, but I've heard that the motor is in a sealed block on these.

Thanks all.

I had the exact same issue and my DME swapped my machine for another machine with similar hours for free under warranty. I'd reach out to your father's DME (their info is likely on the device) tell them about the issue and see what they'll do for you. Mine asked me to bring it in so they could test it then swapped it out.

You can replace the motor on this machine for just over $100 if you are handy. Many YouTube videos and help on his site to show how to do the replacement. Motors are on AliExpress and Amazon, just search Resmed Airsense 10 fan motor. Alternatively, I used Supplier #28 to do the swap for $228 plus shipping. They will clean the device, change the motor and reset the run-hours to zero. Calibration and seals service cost a bit more, but a good deal.
