I just thought I'd throw in my 2cents. I had a thought that it's possible you were opening your mouth at times during the night when using the nasal pillow. This would cause air to escape, lowering the air pressure, which would then trigger the machine to keep increasing the pressure to try and compensate.
I only use a full-face mask so I don't have any personal experience to say what the likelihood of this is, but just thought I'd share in case it helps.
