I video myself sleeping too, but didn't seem to be any evidence of chin tucking.

Woke up feeling air starved, turned machine off fell back to sleep but with mask on
Then woke up 20 minutes later at 3:10AM with mask on but machine off. Turned machine back on went back to sleep, but woke up 5 minutes later from an ugly air starving hypopnea. Felt a little weird, took blood pressure, all was fine, decided the hell with it, went downstairs got laptop and downloaded stats to Oscar to find out what all the commotion was about.
I video myself sleeping too, but didn't seem to be any evidence of chin tucking.

A min of 5 is too low a pressure for adult. I would suggest 7 or 8 so you are getting enough air so you are not taking your mask off.

Air starved, bump your min up to 7 or 8.

The problem when I bump up the min pressure is the leaks. What is the ideal 95% Leak rate? I did raise the pressure to 5.6 last night, not sure if it made any difference, didn't feel air starved, but other than the night before I generally don't feel air starved when it's set to 5.
I use a Amara Full Face Mask, it's okay not great. Thinking about getting a Amara View. Here's last night, no issues, no hypopneas, go figure.

7 or 8 is not high pressure at all. You need a different mask or size. You should not have problems until you are above 15 and many people here have a higher pressures than that without large leaks.

(09-10-2023, 12:41 PM)Phil487 Wrote: What is the ideal 95% Leak rate? Zero is ideal. But I suspect you're looking for what is acceptable. I'm not sure what value ResMed uses to determine an acceptable leak rate so that you get the happy face. I look at my leak rate graph and see if it stays level at a low value most of the time, and anytime it's elevated it should be for a very short time (looks like a spike on the graph). The leak rate needs to stay below 20 L/min, I think, for the CPAP machine to be able to maintain an open airway. But even if it's lower than that it can still be a bother and interfere with your sleep. It might even be the cause of you feeling starved for air. No way to tell for sure until you get a mask that doesn't leak so much. Your leak rate is below 9 L/min, but it's bouncing up and down like crazy. It's not level at a low value for any length of time, let alone most of the night. I agree with the others that you need a different full face mask. I never have understood raising the pressure to remedy the starved for air issue. We breathe during the day at a pressure of zero and don't feel starved for air. But it seems to be a solution that works for folks. Maybe it's because when you raise the pressure you're also raising the flow rate. Quote:I use a Amara Full Face Mask, it's okay not great. Contact your equipment provider and tell them the mask you have leaks too much. Maybe ask them for a recommendation. You may be able to go their offices for a mask fitting. Your insurance should cover this, or it may be a free benefit even if you don't have insurance. It's very common for people to have to try out a few different masks to find one that that works for them. Also, please update your profile to indicate your mask type, make & model, and software use.

RE: Woke up feeling air starved, turned machine off fell back to sleep but with mask on
Hello folks,
Here I am again, basically the same thing. Woke up around 12:30AM to pee and feed the wood stove, went back to bed but forgot to put my mask back on. I woke up about 2AM and put my mask back on fell back to sleep. Woke up at 2:25AM and felt air starved, see red line. Not sure why, graphs look fine. Tried to go back to sleep but felt weird so took my blood pressure, it was fine, and then read and went back to sleep. I video myself sleeping and didn't see anything strange. Felt fine today, but any thoughts on this? |
