Airsign, the use of microfluidic pumps is all over the internet. The take-away is that they are for precise metering of small (milliliter) quantities of liquid and air. They were originally used in inkjet printers. They are really amazing, but they are used for very very small volumes.

Most of us have a minute vent respiratory volume measured in multiple liters for each breath. A micro fluidic pump cannot produce a volume that would sustain that, even if we account for removing the inefficiency of the intentional leak rate, tubing and other losses in the current CPAP systems. The people presenting this technology for crowd funding have not even produced a specification for what air volume and pressure they are able to produce. That would be a bare minimum beginning for me to consider this real.

I have seen a lot of buzz about this on social media, including facebook and the apnea forums. I have no doubt they will raise a lot of money, and that they will never put anything on the market that will benefit apnea patients. The mere promise is enough to raise million$$ from people who think this will revolutionize treatment. Many of the advocates have failed at CPAP and use full-face masks, which is not even part of the development at this point.

Think for a moment how fast a micro device would need to spin to produce a large air volume at pressure. Now imagine the sound of that on the end of your nose. We haven't even talked about the battery needed to power it. A watch battery is not going to go far, so a whole new technology is needed. Vapor ware.

The Minute Volume is the volume of air breathed per minute.

The Tidal Volume is the volume of air breathed per breath, and I think tends to run between 400ml to 600ml for many people.

Doesn't change the validity of your points and conclusion, though.

I think you are probably right that nothing will ever come from the money raised for this.

The fundraising for this may be fraudulent in intent.

But when you really look at it, it isn't all that much less invasive or intimidating than a little P10 pillows mask. ....and the P10 is off the shelf ready for you right now.

I understand your fears. They're very real, and I certainly would not want to do anything to make you feel more uncomfortable. But I think if you had a P10 just to play around with, not necessarily even to hook up to a machine yet, you might find it is not so intimidating after all.

The fact that they said their product can produce "in excess of 20 PSI" is proof that they don't have a clue as to what they are talking about.

20 PSI is roughly 1406 cmH2O of CPAP pressure.
