The biggest problem is doctors who still think that patients who are not obese are not likely to have sleep apnea. My doctor even told me that I don't "look like" the type of person who has sleep apnea because I wasn't fat enough. My BMI was just over 30!

Often the cause and effect get reversed. Obesity causes sleep apnea. Okay, but sleep apnea causes obesity, too. I heard a doctor on network television say that men in their fifties who have tended to gain weight over the years are the most likely to be diagnosed with sleep apnea. She said the lack of sleep leaves the patient tired, and food is turned to as a source of energy. This of course causes weight gain, making the apnea worse. Truly a vicious cycle.

I've often wondered what an apnea patient is "supposed to" look like. Maybe they meant me but I'm not sure.
