RE: Statins may lower risk of heart disease in people with sleep apnea - zonk - 01-12-2016 Do statins really reduce your risk of heart disease? (Off-Topic Forum) http://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Thread-Do-statins-really-reduce-your-risk-of-heart-disease RE: Statins may lower risk of heart disease in people with sleep apnea - lab rat - 01-13-2016 recent research conducted by myself concluded that statins are completely harmless and give no joint or muscle pain even after 8 years. RE: Statins may lower risk of heart disease in people with sleep apnea - I_will_never_sleep_again - 01-13-2016 [Ever since then I have unsuccessfully been trying to persuade any doctors I see for anything to start their patients who need a statin on the lowest possible dose, increasing it gently and slowly only if muscle and liver tolerated. No one has listened to me yet.] My Dr. started me on Pravastatin . 10mg (a child dose he said). I haven't had any problems at all. My bad cholesterol came down from 92 to 78. My problem is that there really isn't any correlation between low or high cholesterol and heart attacks. In fact I read that women with higher cholesterol levels live longer. Can't believe everything you read, but that works both ways. RE: Statins may lower risk of heart disease in people with sleep apnea - Weird Tolkienish Figure - 01-13-2016 Don't necessarily agree 100% with everything said here but I think we can all agree that doctors should take patients symptoms more seriously and be more diligent in linking them to medications we are taking. RE: Statins may lower risk of heart disease in people with sleep apnea - eseedhouse - 01-13-2016 I think it has been known to the medical profession that merely lowering overall cholesterol levels does not prevent heart attacks for quite a while. What seems to matter is the ratio between high density lipoproteins and low density lipoproteins (more HDL is better). Current day lab tests (at least around where I live) give this ratio and I do know that that is what my Dr. looks at. Statins aren't the only way to "improve" the HDL/LDL ratio. Regular vigorous exercise is known to help, for instance. |
