Leaks and Masks - TBlizz - 05-10-2013

I am new to the whole sleep apnea thing. I have been using my machine for 1 week today. Had Sleep Study done due to fatigue all day long feeling & waking up with headaches. I went to sleep study on April 26,2013, I was told to arrive at 8 pm. I arrived to a office that was like a house with 3 BR. It was very nice & comfy & the technician told me to watch tv & make myself at home in my room until she returned to connect the wires to me because she had another patient she had to prep. After about an hr she came back to connect me & I was asleep oops ! She yelled " no sleeping until I connect you. Not to mention 3 days before the study, I had just underwent a breast reduction surgery. I was exhausted but was wondering why I couldn't over come the tiredness, no matter how much rest I got. 2 - 3 hrs after her hooking me up, she came in & said " I have to start treatment now, you definitely have sleep apnea" . That morning she came in around 5:30 & woke me up to go home & said I would be hearing from the Dr. I heard from them a week later & I got my C Pap last Thursday @ pressure of 14 & used it 1 week only to find my heart racing extremely at night & dizziness upon waking. I knew something wasn't right so, I returned to sleep specialist yesterday & was given a A Pap machine with auto pressure of 14 - 20. Hopefully I will find success with this machine. I got a double whammy by getting hit with the surgery & having to sleep on my back & the Sleep apnea. I will press fwd though until I feel like my old self again

Hello TBlizz. Welcome to Apnea Board.

Adjustment problems are common. I'm glad you're able to sleep, though.

Please find out what kind of machine you have and place the name and model in your profile. It'll help us help you.

Thank you much, I'm able to sleep at least 4 - 5 hrs a night which is good for me considering I had insomnia before I started the treatment

Welcome TBlizz, you are not alone we were all new to this once, good luck with it and ask as many questions as you like.
My first tip for anyone is to stay positive with CPAP, it goes a long way Wink

TBlizz, it looks like we have the same machine and mask, two tips I suggest to new users is first, have your hose coming from above your head not by your side, you can get tangled and the mask pulls off. If you have it above your head either over a bedhead or there is a product called a hose lift you can buy. This saves you getting tangled and pulls the mask up rather than pulling down. Second, use mask liners with a full face mask, they save your face touching the silicone, are more comfortable and helps stop mask leaks. Your insurance may cover the cost or I can tell you how to make them fairly cheap.

Thanks for the info & I would love to know more about the liners & masks because I'm having leakage often

TBlizz, I live in Australia but I believe in the US you maybe able to get Remzzzs mask liners on your insurance, try that first, if not, I make my own, I bought some Remzzz’s mask liners, a 6 pack and although they say to only use them once you can wash them and get about 5-6 uses. I then made a template of what I needed from their liners and went to a fabric shop and got 3 ft of 50% cotton / 50 % poly fabric and cut out my own and they also last 5-6 uses, the next time I bought 3 ft of 50% cotton/ 50 % lycra fabric. That last me about 3 months and costs about ten dollars. You can buy any colour you want, a friend of mine makes them in leopard skin colours Laugh-a-lot, No need to do any sewing.

Not sure if you are using any software to see what is happening during the night but it is another good way to identify whether your mask is leaking and by how much. If you update your machine type we can let you know if the software will run on it and how to download it and read the data. The software is free to download and all you will need is a card reader if your computer doesn't have one.

I'm splitting this discussion out of the "Success Story" stickie so it can get more attention.

I have a S9 ResMed Auto Set & would love to learn how to download the data to read about leakage & other nightly occurrences
