Pressure Relief duration? - bbbl67 - 08-17-2021
So I am currently running my CPAP at a fixed 8.5 cm-H20, after some testing I found that if I turned on pressure relief (aka C-FLEX on Philips, of course) my number of RERA's went down. All good, but now I'm curious how long should pressure relief last on the machine nightly? Through OSCAR, I'm seeing the actual pressure float around 7.5 cm constantly, and it's there pretty much 100% of the time, doesn't even touch the preset 8.5 cm at any time. My initial assumption was that it would mainly stay at 8.5 and occasionally dip down below from time to time, for special events.
This is not a problem, my numbers are fine, just curious if this is supposed to be normal with pressure relief?

I'm not certain what Respironics Flex does exactly. It's supposed to be exhale relief. It's not the same as ResMed EPR which is true Exhale Pressure Relief. If you have your pressure set to 8.5 cmH2O, but flex on 1, 2, or 3, it should still come up to your set pressure on inhale.
You should post an OSCAR screenshot. Maybe we'll see better what is going on.
You are aware the Philips Respironics DreamStation is under recall, at least in the US? You might want to leverage this to get the ResMed AutoSet if your in CPAP, a ResMed VAuto if you're on BPAP.

Yes, yes, I'm aware of the recall. I've already taken the machine apart and inspected the foam, it's still in good shape so far, I've had the machine for 4 years already. I'll wait to see what solution Philips comes up with about it for me, I'm already registered in their database. I've seen other people have far worse conditions of their foam than mine, they really need to replace theirs first.
Anyways, here's a sample screenshot of my OSCAR. You'll see in the Pressure section that it's almost exclusively showing squiggly lines below the 8.5 setting.

I'd imagine that's the flex below the flat pressure. Squiggly lines is likely the best it can give.

Flex, any of it's forms, is variable, the amount of flex applied, in addition to the setting of 1,2,3, depends on how "hard" you are breathing. Thus the therapeutic effect also varies and is usually minimal. Quite different from ResMed's EPR.

In the Leak Rate graph, there are two sets of lines, an upper one, and lower one, could that be related to the differences between exhale and inhale?

No, that is Respironics reported leaks. The top line is total leak includes both intentional and unintentional. Bottom line is unintentional leaks only. The bottom line is the one to pay more attention to as it indicates mouth or mask leaks.

Ah, okay, understood. Now when I take a reading through the Philips Dreammapper app, it tells me that I got a 100% non-Large Leak rating, almost every day. So I assume the leaks we're seeing in Oscar aren't considered "Large Leaks"?

That would be what I'm seeing, leaks are within the acceptable ranges.

Do you know what the difference is between C-FLEX and C-FLEX+? Also I've got my CFLEX set to 3, but it seems to only be reducing pressure by 1 cm, so should I reduce the C-FLEX number to 1 or 2?
