Near Zero AHI but still frequently waking up? - MrWhippe - 06-10-2023

G'day ApneaBoards! How are we all this weekend? I was pointed here by Reddit and am hoping you can help me.

I was diagnosed with Maintenance Insomnia last year, which we traced back to Sleep Apnea, wherein I demonstrated an AHI of 23. Since then I've been renting an Airsense 10 CPAP machine, and whilst compliance was a struggle at first, I am now able to consistently sleep with it on without issue.

Whilst the CPAP has alleviated some of the tiredness, I'm still finding that I'm consistently waking up multiple times a night, wherein I then struggle to get to sleep; when I wake up my mind feels incredibly wired (almost adrenalised), and I struggle to get more than 90 minutes of unbroken sleep.

My AHI is consistently low (<1) so I am struggling to identify the cause.

I've attached some OSCAR images below, though please let me know if any further information would help.

I've had a very similar experience the other night - woke up at 0230am wide-awake and ready to go! In my case, however, I was trying a fixed pressure of 9.6cm (CPAP mode)

But around 10am started to feel the lack of hours sleep the night before, and went back to bed for a long and refreshing nap!

I've just seen a video by Leftylanky which may help to explain such problems.  He uses the  results from a full laboratory sleep test to show the different states of sleep.

"Deep Restorative Sleep vs Light Sleep vs REM Sleep: Differences Explained"

P'raps the best we can do is keep using Oscar  (Thank goodness for OSCAR and its developers!) - keep learning how to read the results, comparing them to the real-world  and how we feel, until  we find the "sweet-spot" that best meets our needs?

Our APAP and Oscar - Can  offer us a lot of insight  (and thank goodness that Oscar even exists and is available to us!) , but it seems there is a lot more that remains hidden   P'raps the best we can do is keep looking at our Oscar info, and keep informing ourselves, and experimenting with our pressure settings until we find a seet-spot that works for us?
