Airsense P11 hose-dry function ends with loud burst - normal? - jharuni - 10-12-2023

My Airsense 11 has a feature where after I turn it off in the morning it keeps blowing air for about 20 minutes to dry the hose.  During the drying period it blows at a low pressure, almost silently.   But at the end of the drying period, it creates a 5 second blast of air at full speed.  The blast is very loud.  It's startling to me and my wife if we remain in bed.  If I wake up before her and leave, it wakes her up.

Do you have an Airsense 11 and is this normal?   Does your machine also create this short loud burst of air at the end of the drying cycle?   Or can you say for sure that yours does not, so I can know that something is wrong with mine?

I have tried to approach Resmed through their own customer service, through my DME supplier, and through my doctor, but nobody knows what to do with this.  Resmed refuses to talk to end users.  DME just wants to sell me a new machine or replace this as broken, but I don't think it's broken.  My doctor says nobody else has complained about this.

Thanks for any data or insight.

Brand new user here - I just got my AirSense 11 last week. For whatever it's worth, I have not noticed any sort of hose dry function at all, and don't see it listed in the user manual or clinical guide, but I maybe it's just part of the climate control? I definitely haven't had an experience like you're describing.

I'll try to pay attention tomorrow morning to see if I can detect any air coming from the hose after it's turned off. The only sound I have noticed after it shuts off in the morning is that 30 minutes after it's off, I hear a sort of hissing sound like static. I guessed that it was the cellular service sending out data, but maybe it's the hose or something to do with the tank/tubing heating system.

@cps22 thank you.

The hose-dry function is not documented in the manual and there is no setting to turn it off.  It is in an FAQ on the Resmed web site under "why does my machine keep running after I turn it off".    You can't hear it, it's very quiet.  But if you turn the machine off in the morning (either press the button or wait 10 seconds for auto-off) and then you place your hand over the mask you'll feel the gentle stream of air.

I think the static you are describing half an hour later is exactly what I'm talking about.  Please do investigate more.

As it turns out, I got a new demo mask to try today, and did a test of it this afternoon. After turning it off, I put the hose up to my ear and did notice that there was still a faint air flow. So if the static noise I hear 30 minutes after it turns off has to do with that, then all I can say is that although it's definitely noticeable, it's not nearly as loud as the air flowing through the hose when I unplug my mask with the auto-off feature. I will try to check it tomorrow (if I can remember to go back and look at it 30 minutes after it's turned off), and see if there's also a lot of air coming through when I hear that noise.

This morning I turned off my machine and set a timer for 28 minutes so I could check the hose. During that time there was a very slight amount of air coming from it. At 30 minutes, there was a several-second-long burst of air (the hissing noise I've noticed before), but it was definitely not at full speed. Maybe only at 1/4th the speed at most. My pressure is set at 8, if that makes any difference.

That's very useful to know.  Thank you. I should not have said "full speed", I don't know that ... but it's loud enough to wake up my wife after I've left the room, and to startle me if I'm still relaxing or reading next to the machine after I wake up.
