TMJD improved by CPAP? - squeakybeans - 10-14-2023
I stopped my CPAP therapy a few weeks ago, basically got tired of having to strap in to the mask at night and always having a massive sore under my nose
But my TMJD symptoms have gotten sooooo bad since I stopped. I wonder if CPAP helps with my clenching, or keeps me on my back so I don't put so much pressure on my jaw. My masseters are huge and sore, and my temporalis is twitching/throbbing if I slouch or focus too hard.
Most people say CPAP makes their TMJD worse. But how about better?

Sleep apnea can lead to bruxism (teeth clenching/grinding) in your sleep as your body tries to re-open your airway, which in turn causes sore jaw muscles. I was a heavy grinder for 20+ years and wore through a lot of night guards, before finally going to a dentist that understood the connection between bruxism and sleep apnea, which led to my diagnosis. I got a new night guard shortly after getting my CPAP a few months back, but it's not showing any signs of wear yet.
Go to your DME provider and get fitted for a different mask that doesn't cause sores so you can resume your CPAP therapy. I'd also suggest going to a dentist that specializes in TMJ disorders to help get your symptoms under control. Sleep apnea is nothing to mess around with, and if your TMJ symptoms are caused by bruxism, it can eventually lead to several thousand dollars worth of dental work to fix worn down or broken teeth (ask me how I know...).

I'd take the sore a million times over the jaw spasms. I like everything about my mask except that
I might try the AirFit N30i. I will see my dentist ASAP.
