Intermittent "mooing" noises from (new) machine - marylee - 01-29-2024

Hi, I've been on BiPAP for 3 weeks with AirCurve 10, and have been doing well  despite this - but I regularly get woken up by a loud, brief kind of animal-like noise (mooing? screeching?) that feels like it's coming from the headgear (I have the nasal pillows with the top-of-head hose attachment, the air comes down around my cheeks into the nose.)  It seems to happen more at the beginning of the night, so it ends up taking an hour or more to fall asleep.  Any ideas for me?  (The respiratory therapist acted like they'd never heard of it, a bit concerning!).

Many thanks, folks!

Marylee

I've not heard of anything like that either.

The only thing I can think of if you happen to be laying on your side, that this might block the airflow from that side of the tube which will direct the airflow to the other side.

Since this tubing lays on your cheeks close to your ears, the increase in pressure on one side could produce a louder than normal sound.

I'm just guessing....

This is the classic sound made by a bad "pneumatic block" or fan assembly. A small percentage of Airsense and Aircurve 10 machines are affected by this defect. Resmed has always warranted the repair which consists of replacement of the fan.  I have not heard of many cases like this recently, so the problem has become less common. You will need to arrange repair through your DME supplier. If you are out of warranty, Supplier #28 provides a motor replacement service that includes refurbishing and calibration and reset of run hours for about $200.

Also make sure humidifier tub is fully engaged. I often get a moo when I first start. I push it in then it stops. And I've woken up many times with the same noise. Pushing in tub shuts the dang thing up.

The next thing would be a hose kink. Either the main hose or a mask hose.
