Issues with APAP WWYD - FlyingUmbrella683 - 03-22-2024

I have been using Fixed pressure CPAP for about 9 years with no issues. (Airsense10 on a 10 setting) I love my machine feel great while using it and have been compliant 365/7 for 9 years with no problems. The machine got old and thousands of hours over manufactures recommended usage and insurance required a sleep study to get a new one. No problem. I did the sleep study and my doctor ordered a new Pap but instead of the fixed pressure he ordered an auto adjusting 10-20 pressure APAP. Two weeks after beginning use of this APAP I developed a bad sinus infection and sore throat which the doctor and I attributed to seasonal allergies and I did antibiotics and prednisone etc with no relief. Instead I started having trouble swallowing during the day resulting in choking episodes. Still doctor contributed it to seasonal allergies. After about a month I developed SEVERE stomach pain that would not go away. Multiple trips to the ER diagnosed it as gas and referred me to digestive health. For another month my health continued to deteriorate with both the stomach and the sinus, swallowing, throat issues increasing.

By 3 months in I had severely diminished quality of life and severe pain and symptoms that would not go away with any medication as well as waking up all night long choking. One night my husband said hey didn't all this start when you started that new cpap? Yes it did now that you mention it. So I dug out my old machine and used it instead and within 2 days every single painful symptom, both digestive and respiratory was gone. I finally had relief. I had never even thought of my Cpap being the cause of all my issues.

When I told my doctor he basically said this 'new' machine is perfect for me and he told me to 'find a way' to deal with all the adverse affects and referred me to ENT and Digestive health to come up with a plan to combat adverse side affects from the said new auto titrating machine. It was never investigated if there's something wrong with machine, or why my body cannot handle this APAP etc. He refuses to lower the pressure or consider any other option other than go find doctors to combat the negative symptoms on it. Why would I do that when ALL my issues completely resolve themselves going back on my old fixed pressure 10 machine? It sounds insane to me. So obviously I've decided this doctor does not have my best health interests in mind. Now I kinda have no choice but to treat myself with my old cpap while waiting to find a doctor elsewhere but I just don't understand why a doctor would not want to get to the bottom of why this machine made me so sick.. especially when I'm a long time proven compliant cpap user for 9 years with no issues.

Have you tried setting it to beginning pressure 10 and maximum pressure 10?  I think it would work just like your old machine.  If you haven't done so, set it that way and see how you feel.  Let us know. Smile
