Problem with new ResMed AirTouch F20 mask - RonM39 - 06-06-2024
I have used the Fisher & Paykel Simplus mask for ten years and have been satisfied with it except for the fact that my leaks frequently exceeded the recommended 24 L/min rate (any further tightening of the straps made the mask uncomfortable). I decided to try a new mask and after an internet search chose the ResMed AirTouch F20. When I received it I set it up per the manual and adjusted the fit with the aid of the ‘run mask fit’ option on my ResMed AirSense 10. Then, when I began to use it at night I sensed that my breathing was more laborious than I was used to with my Fisher Paykel. I felt uncomfortable enough that I aborted it and switched back to my Simplus mask and did, in fact sleep well the rest of the night. The next day I rechecked the setup of the F20 and the adjustments and all seemed proper. I then decided to do a test with the help of Oscar. I lay on my bed, not sleeping, but in a totally relaxed position, breathing as normally as I could, wearing each of my two mask/hose assemblies in turn. I started with the ResMed AirTouch F20 for five minutes, then switched to the Fisher Paktel Simplus for five minutes, then analyzed the results via Oscar.
Oscar showed that the leak rate decreased with the ResMed AirTouch F20, but also, that my breathing pattern was considerable different between the two masks. The breathing appeared to be more consistent with the ResMed, although, during the test I seemed to have to concentrate on my breathing more, while my breathing with the Fisher & Payktel was somewhat erratic, but it felt freer and effortless.
What could be causing this difference? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I had terrible leaks always with the F20, both AirFit silicone and AirTouch memory foam. Fisher and Paykel Simplus was easily much better for me. Their Vitera was even better. Neither F&P mask needs to be uncomfortably tight. Check to see if your cushion size is right.

I started out CPAP with an AirFit F20. Initially, I had good luck with it. Then, the AirFit F30 came out and I gave it a try. I liked it better, as it was less obtrusive. It sits below my nose and not over the top of it. With the F20, it's impossible to rub your nose if it itches.
With the F20, it pinches my nostrils shut and I can't breathe thru my nose. That, and it comes awfully close to my eyes.
Anyways, I'm back on CPAP Therapy after a good long hiatus of being off of it.
