New user needs some guidance - kaboom26 - 06-07-2024
Hi, I am a new CPAP user, just got the machine a couple of days ago. It's a ResMed AirSense 11 AutoSet with F&P Eson 2 mask, I surprisingly slept pretty good with this setup during titration study in the lab, but couldn't fall asleep at home both nights that I tried. I fall asleep as soon as I took off the mask both nights though. First, every time I breathe in, the machine makes a loud breathing sound (Darth Vader like), the deeper I breathe the louder the sound. It's loud enough that my wife went to sleep to another room. The sound comes from the humidifier part of the machine, I made sure that humidifier is closed properly and moved the machine to the floor, but it didn't help. Second I feel like I need to do a conscious effort to breathe and when I stop paying attention to my breathing I just catch myself that I don't breathe. The current setting is 6 - 20, ERP 4, humidifier is on. I am getting an SD card to start utilizing OSCAR, but haven't really slept with the CPAP yet. Any recommendations?

A good, proper fitting mask can make a huge difference. I use either a ResMed AirFit F20 or an AirFit F30. The F30 is so much quieter than the F20 is. And, it's much more comfortable.
The only thing that I can hear is my own breathing. A good week or so ago, my F20 mask was making a groaning sound that I swore was coming from the air filter end of my ResMed 10 AutoSet machine.
I did everything that I could think of to find the source of the noise. It was my F20 mask. Now that I'm back to using the F30, it's about as quiet as can be.
Just last night, I was making some very minor adjustments to my mask and paying attention to how it made things even quieter. I'm a side sleeper and a mouth breather. I can't sleep on my back or stomach.
It sounds as if you may need to experiment with different brands and types of masks.

Thank you for the suggestion, I will get a couple of different masks to try. Really want to make it work.

Try turning on the machine with the hose on but without the mask. If the noise is still there you may have a bad blower in the machine . I know from experience.
