What should i do from here?? - Fantasieimpromptu - 06-23-2024

For more then a year i have been dealing with severe fatigue and brain fog which feels directly related to my sleep because
1. I feel like my sleep itself is very diarupted
2. When i sleep on my side my symptoms diminish
I did an at home sleep study half a year ago which is not in english and only showed average oxygen levels which varies from 95-98% which is between the normal range, so lately i started thinking that i probably have uars, how can i get this diagnosed and what steps should i do from here?

Welcome

Do you still have your sleep study?  If so, please post a copy of it with personal information redacted.  That would give us information to work from to help you. Smile

The best idea would be to consult a sleep specialist who can evaluate your symptoms but what can I recommend you is to incorporate lifestyle modifications that improve sleep quality, such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, optimizing your sleep environment, and avoiding caffeine or heavy meals before bed.

But the first ideea is the best, you never know if you have Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome

There's a good scientific article about UARS here:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK564402/

As you'll see, an in-lab polysomnography test is needed to diagnose UARS. Before you go that route, could you let us know whether your at-home test measured RERAs? (That's respiratory effort related arousals.) If it did, what was your RERA index (meaning the number of RERAs divided by the number of hours you were asleep)?

The thing is that it seems like most doctors are unaware about uars, should i tell the sleep doctor if it is possible that i have partial obstructions which wouldnt cause significant oxygen drops but would cause high arousel index?
Thanks.

Thanks. The only thing that the at home test measured was oxygen levels and heart rate and all i got in the results was that my oxygen levels through the night where between 95 to 98 which is normal

If your home test was a home SLEEP test, it measured more than just O2 levels and heart rate. I recommend that you ask your doctor for a copy of the written report on the test so you can see all the data from the test.

A sleep doctor should know what UARS is. I would avoid stating that you have partial obstructions unless you have data that show this. Instead, you can say you would like to find out whether you might have UARS, because if you do, that might explain why you are fatigued and fogged.

In your place, I would also work with my regular doctor to make sure there's not some other condition that is contributing to your daytime symptoms. I would recommend screenings for testosterone levels, thyroid levels, iron, B vitamins, D vitamins, and autoimmune disease, especially in the connective-tissue-disease family. If there's any chance you have Lyme disease or long Covid, get that checked out too.

Note that you've got 4 therapy threads from this May, with only 1 reply back then the thread dies.

Each has asked for the results of a sleep study report. Post it please, and keep the discussion in one of these.
