Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - Lucid - 11-08-2024 I would appreciate the community's perspectives and advice on options for a backup CPAP machine. I recently had a noise problem with my ResMed AirSense 11. The warranty period was up, but since I'm insured by Medicare, my DME mailed me a loaner AirSense 11, and I mailed mine to them for free repair (or possibly replacement). This is still in process. I've been happy with this DME and believe I'll end up with a good as new machine, but it's got me thinking that it would be valuable to have a backup machine on hand just in case. I mean, what if my machine stops working altogether and I have to survive the couple of days it took for the loaner machine to arrive? I've also been thinking it might be useful to have a second machine that I can keep in my go-bag in case of a fire in my building or whatever. I also just received an email from RespShop with an excellent sale price on the AirMini, so I need to make up my mind on that option. At some points I've considered getting one just for travel, but I'm not sure it would really be that much easier to travel with than my AirSense 11. Question 1: What are your thoughts on the AirMini? I would especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has used both the Airsense 11 / Airsense 10, with heated tubing and humidification, and the AirMini. In particular, do you find the AirMini comfortable and quiet enough when you're used to humidification? But any thoughts on the pros and cons of the AirMini are welcome. For example, does it require a lot less power in case of needing to a battery when power is out? Question 2: What options other than the AirMini would you recommend? Question 3: What about just getting a second AirSense 11? Would that be worth it? Or is ResMed apt to come up with an upgrade in the near future? Thanks in advance for your insights! RE: Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - Nightynite - 11-08-2024 A lot of people report the AirMini is loud and they need ear plugs. As far a a backup machine I would stick with the autoset 10. It’s a work horse with a proven history. If you can find a card to cloud version it may be a little cheaper. It does not have a modem. RE: Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - Lucid - 11-08-2024 Thanks, Nightynite! I was thinking of the AirSense 10 as an option partly because so many people on Apnea Board who have used both models say they prefer their old AirSense 10 machines to the new AirSense 11. And of course there must be better deals on the older model. I wish I could test drive the AirMini to see how unpleasant the noise is or not. But I'm probably too caught up in the image of a smaller machine and should instead pay greater heed to those who have actually used the AirMini and found the noise objectionable. RE: Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - Phil487 - 11-08-2024 I just buy them on Craigslist. I bought a 2nd Autoset 10 as a backup a few months ago, $300 with 300hrs. Keeps me asleep and breathing. The best money spent. Don't have to deal with dmes either. Just get an Autoset 10. I bought the 2nd Autoset for when the first one falls apart or I go somewhere, it's in a bag and ready to go. I don't ever want to sleep without my CPAP again and deal with apnea. RE: Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - Nightynite - 11-08-2024 Look at some videos on the mini, there are some tips and tricks that make it a little less noisy. RE: Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - Lucid - 11-08-2024 Phil, exactly -- the one time I forgot to put my mask back on after a bathroom trip I felt like hell the next day. I'd forgotten what that was like and I don't ever want to experience it again! Also, the last time I took the machine to my doctor for a checkup, I forgot to pack the little elbow connector. It's really worth having a second complete set that you've tested rather than trying to remember everything when you're busy or in an emergency. Nightynight, thanks for the YouTube suggestion! RE: Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - Lucid - 11-11-2024 RELATED QUESTION: I've read here that BIPAP machines are mechanically the same as but functionally more versatile than CPAP machines. So, instead of just a backup, if I can find a good price on one of these machines, maybe I should get one? I'm not getting any younger, and my flow limits have been creeping up. Still, my scores are good and it seems unlikely to me that I would fail a sleep study to such an extent that my doctor would be able to prescribe a BIPAP and I could get it under Medicare. Specifically, would the refurbished ResMed S10 AirCurve VAuto BIPAP listed on Supplier #2 for $699 be worth picking up? Thanks as always for your advice! (Also, if any reader needs this machine more than I do, consider this post a PSA that one is available for what looks like a great price.) They all have been trained that they can kill you or something. I went to a pulmonologist once and he said they were only for Heart failure patients. RE: Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - Alfie - 11-11-2024 Go for a Resmed AirSense 10 CPAP, a new one, not a refurbished one. These days you can find it at reduced price with several suppliers online. It is a better deal compared to Resmed AirSense 11 CPAP. Even if you frequently travel, this CPAP is convenient due it is lightweight and easy as a carry-on luggage. RE: Best Backup CPAP Machine Options? - cate1898 - 11-11-2024 I just purchased a used but refurbished Airsense 10 Autoset For Her from Supplier #2. Prompt service, machine looked brand new (had 167 hours on it) and came with everything needed, humidifier, new hose, original padded travel case, power cord with brick and original user manual. At time of ordering I was offered a regular Airsense 10 with only 19 hours, but I opted for the 'For Her' version. It was sent UPS to me quickly and all for under $500. Hose was defective and they immediately couriered me out a new one. Great service, highly recommend! I felt comfortable buying through them as there has been many people on here who have had the same great experience dealing with Supplier #2. Whatever, you decide, good luck. |
