ResMed AirSense 10 Respond (Autoset) dropped a foot - radarrab - 11-28-2024
My CPAP got pulled off the low shelf of the 'nightstand' by the hose, and dropped about a foot to a wood floor. I wasn't wearing it at the time, but I picked it up right away (it was horizontal but not sure how it landed) and checked it. It had some water in the humidifier reservoir, and when it powered up, it made a gurgling sound.
That's not the first time it's gotten pulled off, but most if not all the other times it's been when I've been wearing it, dry or wet. I didn't start using the humidifier for quite a while, until I started reusing an Rx nasal spray for allergies, supposedly the best one for chronic post-nasal drip, some periods worse than others and that's when it starts to really bother me and I use the spray. At some point the inside of my nose got crusty, some thickened skin and I wasn't sure if it was the dry air or the spray or the combination of both, so I started using the humidifier, distilled water.
Back to the drop. Ok, gurgling not good, so I unplugged it, removed the humidifier, and shook that part downwards, and some water came out, so I set it on a towel on end so any remaining water could drain out and left it like that for at least a day. When nothing came out when I shook it, I tried it again and it made out of the ordinary whirring noise.
That time I stood it on end and filled the empty area with desiccant packs and stood it on end again, and left it for several days. It still made a whirring sound. It doesn't make much sound normally so this was louder and different. The sound was steady, but when I tried it with the mask, it became uneven. I've let it sit and tried it every couple of days, but it's the same.
I could clean it up a bit and change the filter, but it doesn't seem like that would help this issue.
This must have happened on 11/15 since the 16th shows no data. I've been using nose strips and a piece of medical tape to keep my mouth closed/mostly closed in the meantime, which is what I do when I've washed the headgear and it hasn't dried by the time I need it, or I'm camping or away for a few days to a week. Or I just need a break and quiet for a night (assuming things haven't gotten worse, the analysis/diagnosis was OSA, minor).
Is there anything else to try?
I did leave a message at a time that a receptionist should have been there for the sleep clinic on 11/21 (which is also Pulmonary and Sleep Studies department/one of the Outpatient Sleep Clinic locations but I never got a call back.
The last time I needed to ask one of the sleep clinic staff a mask question, they didn't call me back but scheduled a phone appointment for that day and I got notice of via text though I didn't actually see it but was available. Things seem to be happening that lead me to believe that they're short-staffed at least in the specialist departments that I visit.
I actually would prefer something else that's less trouble and bother, but I'll put that in a new thread.

I'd surmise the drop and not the water is the issue such that the blower has been dislodged a bit.
There are a couple very good easy to follow YouTube videos of how to replace the blower. It is not super difficult.
I'd try to take it apart, remove the blower, and put the same one back and while it's open dry out any water you see and look for any loose connectors. I'm pretty sure you can run it while the case is off at least to learn if it's quieter.
Those fans spin at a high speed and being off axis even a few mm might make it noisy. And it's mounted horizontally so a drop would tend to move it out of line.
This is a great video because unlike some fixit videos that depend on you remembering the steps in reverse to reassemble, this guy does the reassembly. And it is well lit and closeups of every step. There are not many steps and only about 8 screws removed. You need a set of small screwdrivers with either hex head or Torx but there are lots of kits with every small screwdriver head for $8-12, search Amazon for this one or any similar one with Torx and hex (this one even has the Apple tri-lobe bit, you never know). This is just an example and might be in a hardware store locally.

If you have more than 10,000 hours on it maybe just buy a replacement motor and change it anyway.

A friend of mine dropped his S10, dried it off, packed the water chamber with rice, and let it run for eight hours. He claimed that all was okay, but a few months later, he found mold and corrosion on the circuit boards. Perhaps you should let a professional clean and test the unit. I enthusiastically recommend Supplier #28.
