Help Needed Interpreting CPAP Data - a5n5 - 01-07-2025

Hi everyone,
I’m a new CPAP user and would really appreciate some help interpreting my data to ensure I’m getting the most out of my treatment. I’ve been using my CPAP machine since last November, and I added a SD card last month to track my data using both OSCAR and SleepHQ.
While I’ve been able to get some insights from the apps, I’m still not confident about understanding the details or identifying areas that might need adjustments. Here’s a bit of context:
  • Machine/Mask: ResMed AirSense 11
Pressure Settings: Minimum Pressure is 4
  • Primary Concerns: My AHI is still around 4. Leakage seems to be high on certain days. I am using nasal pillow (Dreamweaver) which sometimes creates a whistling sound in the night that wakes up me and my wife.

I’ve attached a few screenshots from OSCAR and SleepHQ (e.g., daily overview, pressure trends, AHI breakdown). I’d be grateful if someone could help me interpret these or point me toward any adjustments I might need to discuss with my doctor .

Thank you in advance for your time and guidance!
Best regards,

We use OSCAR for our data.  You need to use the F12 button to take a screenshot and when you want us to see the screenshot you attach it with the button at the bottom of your post.  This sets up the screenshot the correct size and makes it easy for us to  view it.  The OSCAR charts we need to see is in my signature at the bottom of this post.

Welcome to Apnea Board,

I see high leaks as one immediate issue to address. In OSCAR the very high, wide and flat leak pattern indicates mouth leaks in the first third of the sleep session. Later with the more spikey leaks indicates the mask is leaking.

The pressure combo of 4-20 AND EPR 3 isn't working well. Move the minimum to 7 so EPR works unhindered.

You don't need to use imgur to attach OSCAR charts. Do so directly to your post with the New Attachment button below the text box. You want to format them in default order with left panel but without calendar.

I took a look at both the SleepHQ data and the Oscar data. On some nights your leaks are basically OK, so long as they aren't waking you up. So greater consistency is what you should aim for. Try figuring out why you have heavier leaks on some nights and fewer leaks on others.

I completely agree with the advice you're already getting about your pressure settings.

I see that you are using the machine on average for less than 6 hours per night. Are you taking your mask off and sleeping longer than 5+ hours? Or do you sleep just 5+ hours per night?

Thank you all for your replies. Attaching the OSCAR images here directly (hopefully got it right).  I sleep about 7 hours per night,  I do take the mask off for the last hour or so for comfort reasons. Another issue that I am facing is a whistling sound that comes from the exhale vent in the mask, usually 2-3 hours into my sleep. Its loud enough to wake me up (and the wife!). I apply a little water to the vent and it goes away for a bit. Should I try a full face mask instead?

Please include the left panel with your Oscar images, and provide all and only these graphs:

Events
Flow rate
Pressure
Leaks
Flow limitations
Snores.

The whistling sound must be annoying! Although you fix it with water, the cause may actually be water stuck in the diffusing mesh of the vent. You might try lowering your humidity a little to see whether that helps. You might also look very closely at the mesh to see whether it has any tiny bits of gunk in it that might be helping to trap water. Some people clean their vents using a Waterpik-type device.
