AirMini noise: an experiment
As people have noted, the ResMed AirMini is much noisier than a regular non-travel machine. The noise is a hissing sound from the mask, not from the machine itself.
ResMed recommends using only their masks. I was able to do a comparison. The summary is: It's a bit quieter with the ResMed masks than with my regular mask. But both were much louder than my regular non-travel machine.
I recorded some audio clips, but it won't let me post MP3's here unfortunately. (Any suggestions?)
The machines: Lowenstein Prisma SMART, ResMed Airmini
The masks: Philips Dreamwear (with an adapter), ResMed F30 (with the ResMed AirMini Setup Pack)
I tested at 4 cmH2O, and also at 10 cmH2O. I used EPS on the AirMini.
The AirMini causes a loud hissing sound by the mask, like Darth Vader. I soon got used to it though. I haven't tried it with my wife yet; I worry that it will be harder for her to get used to it.
The noise is a little bit more annoying with the Dreamwear mask than with the ResMed mask, so if you can afford it, I would definitely recommend using their mask.
