Apnoea when moving between sleep stages?

Apnoea when moving between sleep stages?
I’ve been using a CPAP machine (as an APAP) for about 18 months now. Using Amara mask and most of the time I can cope and my API has gone from 26 down to less than 5.

However, last 2-3 weeks I am experiencing a horrible apnoea just as I slide into sleep. I gasp very long and loudly and with a sort of groan, as I sit up. It’s really very unpleasant.

I seemed to recollect that I’d read somewhere that some people experience apnoeas particularly when moving between the different sleep stages. Does anyone have any knowledge about this? And can anyone provide some suggestions as to what I could do about this nasty point just as I drift off into sleep?

It’s bad enough normally with the usual love/ hate relationship with my machine before I go to bed, but this latest is really adding to my dislike of the whole thing!

Before I was diagnosed I used to feel this horrible feeling just as I nodded off, but it seems to now be extremely unpleasant.

Thank you.

I can only say that my doctor has the same suspicion in my case. I tend to awaken around the same time every morning in the early hours.
