Back sleeping negatively effect CPAP therapy?
I have been using CPAP therapy for the past 2 years and sleep mostly on my back. I feel my numbers are good and AHI is kept under 2 for a majority of nights ; however, I keep reading articles, watching videos, etc that insist that back sleeping is harmful to those with sleep apnea-- Even if one is wearing a mask. Are there others who have been able to switch sleeping positions or have you achieved long term success while sleeping on your back?

I successfully trained myself to sleep on my right side instead of my back and reduced my treatment pressure by half.
See the following accessories and procedures, which helped me as well. Palatal prolapse mitigated with positional therapy. MedCline Shoulder Relief Wedge and Body Pillow System Side sleep enforcer for positional apnea Right-side sleep reduces the risk of Alzheimer's deases and dementia

Always sleep on my back. Out cold in seconds, wake up fast.
Zero issues here. AHI 0.1 last night for 7:51. Untreated 23.5. Everyone is different. Only you can determine best practices. My BMI is 22.0. In my case, there's not a physical collapse.

RE: Back sleeping negatively effect CPAP therapy?
No way could I sleep on my back. I recently has a Catheter Ablation done on Sept. 19th. They put me on my back and the procedure was completed in under an hour.
Once back in recovery, I was still on my back. When I came to, my lower back with killing me. They had a special brace on my right leg so I couldn't lay on my side. It wasn't until several hours later that the brace was removed and I could then lay on my side. What a relief that was! My back pain was so severe, I was worried that it was going to stay with me for a good while. Once on my side, the pain / discomfort disappeared quickly. Even in bed, I can only lay on my back for a few minutes. |
