The problem with DME's is once they've sold you a machine they've made most of the money off you that they ever will. There's still a significant amount of money to be made selling you supplies, but they would have to sell you supplies for a long time to match the profit they make selling you a machine. They do have to keep selling you supplies, though, to fulfill the terms of their contract with your insurance company (or whatever the equivalent of that is for government-subsidized health care).

Sometimes the best thing to tell a DME is that you spoke with a doctor, and you're just following the doctor's advice. If they pry you can just say that the discussion was related to an aspect of your healthcare that you wish to keep private. In other words, MYOB.
