Good summary.
Note that even the official software puts disclaimers on the bottom of its reports, so "trustworthy" is a very fuzzy concept. I've been pursuing reliability as a concrete first step.
For the organizations that have a particularly high bar of trust, they use the data directly from the machines, either uploaded via cellular/wifi modem or via phone-in compliance code. In theory they could "trust" the SD cards too, but people could always delete sessions from those...
