You haven't confused Carbon Monoxide with Carbon Dioxide, have you?
CO2's not really particularly poisonous. It's about 0.4% in normal air, and it's about 4% in our exhaled breath.
Generally, in any rebreathing situation, it's oxygen deprivation that gets you, not excess CO2.

I give point to ed on this, seems that CO2 buildup can cause enormous problems. It may not act as a poison, but sure can make the system go way haywire leading to death, if only death by confusion.
