How often do you actually replace your CPAP mask/headgear?
Hi all,
I'm curious how often you replace your CPAP mask and headgear parts, in practice? I know ResMed recommends every 3-6 months, but this seems a bit aggressive to me?
I've had F30i equipment for about 9 months now with no visible damage that I can see, so I'm wondering whether to replace it or keep using it until I see signs of deterioration. I've also had some more mask leaks in the last month, so it got me thinking about whether this was related to mask deterioration or not.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Franko

For me, I know that I go a lot longer than what is recommended. My DME supplier keeps me well stocked on equipment.
I use the ResMed AirFit F20, F30, and F40 masks and headgear. When I feel that the headgear needs some attention, I soak it in hot water and dish soap for about 30 min. or so. That's after swishing it around well.
I then rinse it with hot water and use some paper towels to dry it as well as possible. I then let it air dry for a few hours. Washing it does wonders for longevity and tensions it back up nicely.
The cushions last me at least 5-6 months or so. They get washed frequently to extend their life. In a nutshell, it all comes down to individual preference.
RE: How often do you actually replace your CPAP mask/headgear?
ResMed recommends 3 months because ResMed sells headgear and pillows. Like Gillette or Epson do but at least the razor blades get dull and the ink runs out.
If you wear something like the P10, you have to replace the rubber straps because they sag. Aftermarket straps are as good or better at half the price or less. The frame, let's call it that, which is the two arms, the plastic cup to hold the pillows and hose attachment will probably last 10 years. I have never replaced it. If you clean the pillows, they also last a lot longer than 3 months. You need to clean between the two layers of the pillows which might not be obvious that it is two layers.
If you look at something like the Swift FX which I think is the best nasal pillow mask, that frame will outlast you. The pillows and air connection point are unitary so when you change the pillows you change the connection point. The small hose ends in a metal ring so the hose and metal ring will last as long as the frame. And any velcro will work for the strap which fixes the mask around the back of your head.
Absent physically damaging the headgear I think the cranium/pillow erosion rate must be measurable in centuries.
I am on my 3rd actual PAP machine in 15+ years and I have and still use the original Swift FX and P10 frames from time zero.
I don't wear full face masks but kept clean and not worn as tight as a too-small brassiere, they probably last for years vs. months.

Also a F30i user. My current insurance company "forces" me to replace the cushion every 30 days. The headgear and tube every 90 days.
I have used the cushion up to 50 days + and felt they were still good. I have used the tube for 1+ in the past. With regular cleaning and care, they do last a long time.
The vendor even "threaten me" by saying I need to stay on this tight timeline...or else...something my insurance company requires it. Like not being in compliance with my medical care. They do this when they call to refill my order.
They did not do this with my prior insurance company. I think vendors know what the insurance companies are willing to cover, and push that. Even when it is covered, I still have a portion to pay. So now, I just don't answer their calls, unless I low on supplies.

your supplier is breaking the law. you need to report them to your insurance company or medicare if you are under them. they are supposed to ask you what you need and give you only that. you also should ask your insurance for a list of suppliers you can switch to.

I have Medicare A&B, and BC/BS as my supplemental insurance. Between the two, my CPAP supplies are 100% paid for. No out-of-pocket costs at all.
I've never had an insurance company, or a DME supplier, give me any grief over anything. My DME supplier (Rotech) has been courteous and professional the whole time. Never demanding or difficult.
You need to find a different DME supplier.
