How to adjust the full mask usage
My mom (around 70) is using the ResMed Airsense 10 autoset for Her for 4 months and stopped for 6 months as not able to adjust. Now she is trying again. Her complaints is when she lost conscious, then with mouth and nose breath, the air in the mask seems too strong and woke her up (She has sleep disorder and sleep onset insomnia) and hard to fall sleep again. Also nose get congestion. So i did ask her to use nasal wash and the OTC steriod Fluticasone twice a day. Please advice if anything can help her adjust the mask usage. Please let me know any suggestion. thanks a lot

RE: How to adjust the full mask usage
I'm very new to CPAP (2 weeks) and I have the ResMed AirSense 10 (for him). I found that increasing the humidity to 5 or 6 helped with my congestion, but higher left me with a sweaty face. I'm a mouth breather so I'm on a full mask, but had to add a chin strap which has helped. I'm finally getting used to the pressure (8-10 cm) but I just had to make a decision that not wearing isn't an option. I also switched from the AirFit F20 silicone mask to the AirTouch F20 with memory foam. It fits in the same headgear as the AirFit and I think it is significantly more comfortable but I know everyone is different.

If you can look at the machine data on-screen or use #Sleepyhead software on a computer to look at her data or post a chart it will be incredibly helpful. Doe her machine have an SD card behind the door on the top-left side of the machine?

Keep the idea that she has to use the machine as much as possible because intermitent usage will not allow her to become acclimated to the pressure she experiences. A chin strap, as markndurham has suggested, has helped many people that mouth breath and is a very cost effective solution. As per Sleeprider, get Sleepyhead (free) and get some more detailed information available to us so we can more effectively give you advice. RE: How to adjust the full mask usage
Yes it does contain SD card. I use resmed Iphone App to view report each day if she use the machine. When she use, AHI is good.
Her initial problem is she has been taking sleep pills to help her sleep, as she had hard time to fall in sleep, and stay only for 2-3 hours sleep time. So last year she found out she has sleep apnea. I bought her the machine but since she has trouble sleep, she is not able to continue wear the mask all night as she said she has no sleep mood. Now she want to try again as she will be only one at house. So she sometimes take pill and fall into sleep, then she felt nose congested. (humidity level is 7, max is 10). So she use mouth breath, then per her description, the air came out around the mask and woke her up. I ask her whether mask is tight, she said yes. For nose congestion, Doctor suggestion is getting the steroid spray, and they said it is primarily Obstructive Sleep Apnea. She just started the spray this week. I don't know how to help her adjust and accept she need to continue using the device. Thanks a lot for help. please see the summary graph attachment here and let me know what other data you need, and if any setting need to adjust. Although show she use avg 5 hours a day, but doesn't seem like she did sleep well 5 hours. Could you please let me know the Leak medium, 95th percent and max meaning? Any concern? thanks so much

I just don't know what would be the right option as getting all different things add up the cost and at the end not sure still work. thanks a lot.
RE: How to adjust the full mask usage
The chin strap may help your mom in several ways.
1. When she opens her mouth while sleeping, she can feel overwhelmed by the pressure as it can enter the mouth and nose versus nose only. 2. When she opens her mouth, the mask is no longer able to maintain a seal and the mask moves around causing leaks. 3. Placing the chinstrap over the headgear will help secure the mask further, in turn, the mask may not move and cause leaks. Humidity can play a big role in nasal congestion. Getting the right setting will require some adjustments and outcomes that you will have to try on a nightly basis. Generally, a heated hose serves 2 purposes. it helps to prevent condensation in the mask and adjusts the temperature of the air for comfort. I recommend that you set humidity to 4 and try for a night. If that needs to be adjusted go 5 the next night. If condensation develops in the mask, try keeping the hose covered. If you still get condensation, you may need a heated hose.

I have tried set the humidity level several times but can't get right, currently is at 7. At the same time she is using nasal OTC steriod spray. If use strap, will this prevent her open mouth to breath while she sleep as her nose is congested.
