How to sell a used CPAP machine

I've got an unused Philips DreamStation -- Philips sent it to me to replace their recalled machine that I'd already replaced with a great ResMed machine. I'm unsure what regulations are regarding CPAP (or APAP, in this case) sales. Should I just sell it through Craigslist or EBay the way I would any other electronic equipment, or are there laws restricting sales because these are prescription machines?

If there are laws, what are the legal channels for selling used machines?

Thanks for any guidance on this -- I was unable to find it discussed on previous threads, although I'm sure if I had better search terms I might have found some.

eBay will not permit selling due to its a medical device. Sell it on Craig’s list if you choose. There’s a lot in my area from everybody trying to do the same.

I have gifted and sold machines in the past. Facebook Marketplace is a pretty good platform. Craigslist is okay but try to do your transactions in a public place. Technically prescription required items cannot be resold, but it clearly happens all the time. If you want to be totally legit, then get purchase estimate from Supplier #2 who can legally resell your machine. If it has no or low use hours, that can be a great way to have a safe, fair transaction.

Thanks for the info. I definitely do not want to try selling on this forum, which is why I asked for advice. I did find an online CPAP broker, not listed as a supplier that I can find in the forum's list, that offers to put your CPAP up for sale. If it sells, they have it shipped to them for analysis and clearance, after which they ship to the buyer with a proper prescription. They get 25% of the sale.

Sounds reasonable to me, but I'm unsure how to get feedback from anyone else about the business if we're not allowed to post business names here. Any suggestions?

Just go to google and enter this. “Sell used cpap”. And take your pick.

I think you can sell on DotMed as a vendor for a $20 setup fee and 5% commission if sold, or fixed fee of $40. Lots of members buy there, and you can search the CPAP listings to see what they sell for.

you can sell machines on offer up, if you have it in your area.

get the run hours from the machine. it's a nice spec to provide. if you did not use, state that. it's best to be as up front as possible.

oops, my bad. you can only sell machines on offer up if you're a dealer. i forgot that.

but you can definitely sell it on cl. and the aforementioned fb pages, too.

Thanks to another forum participant, I read about a great free community resource called a "loan closet" where you where you may borrow basic medical equipment like CPAPS and other DME. A great place to donate used equipment and unused supplies.

Google your city name + "loan closet" and see if these wonderful resources can be accessed in your area. Many are run by charitable organizations that can provide tax deductions.

What is a DME Loan Closet?

The Loan Closet is a free community resource where you may borrow basic medical equipment such as wheelchairs, power mobility equipment, walkers, crutches, canes, beds and bathroom safety items.

How does this program work?

Typically a loan closet receives donated new or gently used equipment from people who no longer need it. The loan closet will then clean and check the equipment and make it available to another person. Depending on the particular loan closet, the equipment may be loaned out for a set period of time, for as long as the person needs it or, in some cases it may be given away. When the equipment is returned, it is cleaned again and checked for safety and is then made available for the next person. The medical equipment available varies from one loan closet to another.
