Question
Interesting Article on Sleep Apnoea
Came across a very interesting article on the WWW tonight and I'd be very interested to hear the thoughts of some of those much wiser than I in everything Sleep Apnoea. Certainly a little different to some of what I've read since being diagnosed with SA a while back.Thinking-about

Diet and oxygen therapy for apnea treatment and possible use of COPD drugs, all in lieu of positive air pressure. I'd be more impressed if this "researcher" spent some time to publish results for peer review. The lack of any discussion of PAP as part of any therapy solution is perplexing.

RE: Interesting Article on Sleep Apnoea
This 'doctor' was bought before the General Medical Council in 2011 over charges of promoting ineffective treatment to patients. Her web site sells her particular brand of nutritional "supplements", and her title page does not list her as having an MD. She pushes the "paleolithic" diet, which is unsupported by any evidence and actually there was no "paleolithic diet" anyway since people in those days ate what they could get and what they could get depended on where they were located.

I'm suspicious about this kind of "advice" - the only treatment for sleep apnea that has any actual evidence of being safe and effective is the varieties of positive airway pressure machines.

Dad always said, "Consider the source." Personally, if she doesn't have M.D. after her name, I'd be very suspicious. Even if she is a medical doctor, a peer review would seem to me to be quite appropriate; that's usually how they do things.

After reading some of her "about my practice" I would not go near her for anything. Does not like "evidence" based medicine, hummm.

Just for clarification (and in no way supporting or defending her views) her listed qualifications are MB BS - bachelor of medicine / bachelor of surgery. This is the standard qualification in the UK, Australia and many other English-speaking countries. Some of the older universities use the Latin equivalent MB ChB. In Australia the MB BS is equivalent to an advanced master's degree and MD is reserved for an actual doctorate equivalent to a PhD. The exception is the University of Melbourne which has recently started promoting its master level course as MD. This is unfortunate and in my view devalues a genuine MD.

Good find! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales...650048.stm

Quote:A doctor has been banned from prescribing drugs and told to take down part of her website after appearing before the General Medical Council.

Dr Sarah Myhill will have to comply with the order for 18 months after two complaints were made against her.

She has a private practice near Knighton, Powys, where she specialises in treating chronic fatigue syndrome.

Her supporters were outside the hearing in London and claimed she was the victim of a witch-hunt.

There have complaints against her on seven occasions since 2001, but this the first time Dr Myhill has appeared before a General Medical Council (GMC) panel.

Before the hearing, she said that she could not understand why complaints against her were being heard.

But the chair of the GMC panel said there serious concerns about the potential risk to patients and her fitness to practice would continued to be reviewed.

One of the complaints was on the content of Dr Myhill's website, which warned patients against oral contraceptives, the MMR triple vaccine as well as mammogram tests and biopsies for cancer.

But Dr Mygill says she tries to find the causes of a disease, rather than treating the symptoms with drugs.

Yep, that's who I'd go to for advise! Oh-jeez

There is some merit to the last paragraph which infers that personal or video taped observation of a subject may be useful when a formal sleep study isn't available.

I doubt the rest of it has much value to the typical sleep apnea sufferer.
