Is it possible to measure your baseline apnea events with CPAP?
#1
Question
Is it possible to measure your baseline apnea events with CPAP?
I wonder if it is possible to measure your baseline sleep apnea events with the CPAP machine? (I am using a Resmed AirSense 10)

I mean the amount of apnea events you have without any help so if it is possible to just have the mask on and have it record number of events but give no actual treatment to see your baseline as if you slept without any cpap.

No.

The lowest most devices go is 4cm, though a few will do 3cm.

By definition, that is trerating, probably not well, but enough so that you aren't measuring your baseline.

Yes, but still it could perhaps give some indication if you set the lowest and max cm to the lowest setting and then also set EPR to 3?

It doesn't matter even if you could set the EPR value to 10,000, it will not go below its lowest pressure, which is 4 cm for a Resmed.

You need 4 cm of pressure to keep you from inhaling air that you exhaled on your last breath. That's where the air vents come in to play on the mask. They keep the hose purged of exhaled air.

What you can do is set the pressure to 4 cm and look at your AHI. If your AHI is above 5 you need the CPAP machine and you need it set to a higher pressure. On the other hand, if you have very few events (a very low AHI) at 4 cm of pressure then it's possible that you don't need a CPAP machine. Only a sleep study will tell.

You cannot get a true baseline period.
You can tell that your are either "Well treated" at this min pressure, or that you definitely still need CPAP therapy.

If it shows you are well treated you need a diagnostic sleep test to see if you no longer need CPAP. That diagnostic sleep test will provide an untreated baseline.
