Long Machine use Sleeping Hours?

Long Machine use Sleeping Hours?
Hi you guys I have a question for you....

I have been on my BIPAP machine now for over 1 year and a half......

I usually average 10 to 11 hours per night usage...... Is this normal?

I feel like I am sleeping my life away.

Not so sure what constitutes "normal" anymore. I'm retired and can sleep in as late as I feel like. For me, 9-10 hrs. or so is routine.

Many complain about not being able to sleep long enough. Are you feeling rested when you wake up?

I've been on CPAP now for over six years. I can take it or leave it. It makes no difference in my sleep.  Eat-popcorn

Well, I wake up and feel sometimes still tired after 10 hours.  Then other times my wife says I am "the Ever-Redy bunny that wakes up and wants to get going for the day....unlike her!

Is 10 to 11 time a normal amount of time under the mask after a year and a half of BIPAP?  There are times that I only get 9 hours at a sequence. (Male Age 70)

I was estimated at 76 apneas per hour when diagnosed.... now I am roughly at 5 to 8 apneas per hour.... Way less.

Just trying to figure all of this new stuff out.

It is still trying for me to go under the mask every night and try to relax and accept all of this..... I have to meditate and go beyond the clostrophoba and forced air and turning with you shoulders and hips for this long...... I think all and all, it ia probably saviing my current life.

Any thoughts?

I don't think there is a "normal" as to how many hours a person sleeps. Some folk do perfectly fine with 5-6 hours, others need 8+ hours. Myself, I'm a zombie with less than 7 hours. I wouldn't obsess over it, unless you are also tired during the day and feel you need to nap along with all those hours of sleep.

Do you sleep soundly or do you wake up a lot during the night?

With a AHI of 5 to 8, there may be a few adjustments to your therapy settings that may help lower that a bit. (Even though you didn't ask. Smile

RE: Long Machine use Sleeping Hours?
Thanks for your response OpalRose!

Attached is a screen shot of last nights session...

No I do not need naps in the daytime and feel fine.  I usually sleep through the night with out getting up.  However, currently,  I wake up once during the night because of a stuffed up nose and can't breath untill I take a couple puffs of Costco Allerflow.

Note my "leaks" in green at the bottom.

I am using a ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto BIPAP machine. Heated Tub and air hose.

Mask: FiskerPaykal Full Face Evora mask and headgear.
I have learned to replace the cushion often (every 6 weeks) and headgear every 3 months. Not sure why I am getting so many leaks last night.

Leaks and Apneas seem to follow the AHI's.

Let me know if you received this.

RE: Long Machine use Sleeping Hours?
The first thing I'll suggest is to change the Trigger setting from medium to very high.  This should bring the Clear Airway  count down.

Don't make any other changes until we see the result.  We may look at lowering the Pressure Support a little, but wait and see.

Repost tomorrow.

I also want to bring to your attention that the clusters of apnea suggest that your are sleeping in a way that may be cutting off your air, like sleeping on your back with a too tall pillow that allows your head to tilt forward into your chest.

This is called Positional Apnea.  Please read:

https://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.ph...onal_Apnea

So that's your homework for now.  Repost tomorrow and note how you slept.

I think some people simply need more sleep than others. I would not worry about it.

It would be helpful if you posted your Oscar chart a little differently. We don't need to see the AHI chart because it is posted on the left panel. Eliminate that from your chart and add Flow Limits below the Leak Rate.

OpalRose  Thanks for you response.

My ResMed Bipap  ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto..... I have never changed any of the internal settings since I started this therapy.

How do you do it?  Is it hard to do?

I notice that your side bar says HI TRIGGER

Let me know.

Simultaneously press the round knob and home button for a second or two.  This takes you to the "secret" Clinicians menu.

Press round knob under the highlighted Settings menu.  Now under Therapy, scroll down until you see Trigger. Click on that and change to Very High. Press again to set.  Scroll back up to Home and press round knob again.  Exit out of Clinical menu.

For future reference, order your CLINICIANS menu HERE.

Scroll down to Section Three to find your machine.

RE: Long Machine use Sleeping Hours?
Hi OpalRose...... I figured out how to go into the clinical settings on my BIPAP.

I just changed the Trigger Setting from MEDIUM to HI VERY HIGH

What is this setting?  Will I notice anything different in my sleep tonight?

Thanks for your support!

Reesche

See attached Oscar screen shots of last night.

I had one of your members say that I do not need the info on the right as much as more detail on the bottom graphs.... do you concur?
