New Member, New to Treatment
Hello all! I was excited to find this little corner of the internet as I’ve known I’ve had sleep issues for years but didn’t realize how much they were effecting me until recently. Finally decided to see a sleep specialist and discovered I had complex apnea and a AHI of 49.
3 weeks ago I received a ResMed AirSense 10 and a ResMed F30i mask. My pressures are 7-11
Current AHI is ranging between 10-2 (last night was a record low of 1.4)
What is a good AHI that I should be targeting. Is anything below 5 good?
Already I know I no longer hit the snooze button and I don’t hit the 3 o’clock wall as of this week. But what about other things such as my blood pressure. How long before I see results there?
RE: New Member, New to Treatment
Drs use under 5 as successful treatment but most people here are not as worried about the number but once you get down to below 5 it is more important how you feel.
With that being said lower is better but how are you are feeling is what you should be working onn

Doubleb, it seems you are doing quite well treating complex apnea with CPAP. With complex apnea, the efficacy can vary a lot more than with simple obstructive apnea because CPAP has no means of treating CSA with backup breaths, and can even make it worse in some cases. What kind of residual events are you experiencing? Are you feeling the benefits of therapy already?

Some definite benefits already. Like I said, I no longer hit snooze, I'm more of a morning person than I realized. @ 3 in the afternoon, I'm not crashing. energy lvl is starting to improve. Blood pressure is as high as ever. also, once my back stops hurting, I'll be going back to the gym to if I can actually lose some weight this time. For a while I was working out 4x per week, tracking calories and carbs, and the scale wouldn't budge, i'm talking months. I guessed it was my lack of real sleep, so we will see...

Humans are fascinating because so variabke. A few lucky people see great results very quickly. Others take months before real improvement. Perseverance is the key.

Anything below 5 is considered normal, never expect to hit 0, but a few things, as others have said it all depends on how you feel, if you are at 4.9 and feel well rested and great then that is good, if you are at 0.7 but feel like you woke up every 70ish minutes then obviously that is an issue still. Also don't worry to much about the number because remember you could have one night where your AHI was 6.0 with an average event length of 11 seconds, and you could have another night where your AHI was 2.0 but an average event length of 35 seconds actually meaning you had more breathing issue when you were at 2.0 then when you were at 6.0, those AHI numbers are only part of the information and don't give the full picture, it is just the easiest way to diagnose even though it is only partial data. As such just because the event count was higher or lower than another night doesn't necessarily mean you had better or worse sleep, which is why the answer is "It depends, it matters how you are feeling".
