Can't access profile or welcome screen unless I reinstall?

Can't access profile or welcome screen unless I reinstall?

OSCAR newbie here- please tell me what I'm doing wrong. Everything is fine when I import to a new installation but then I can't seem to access the profile again??? Where do I need to click? When I launch OSCAR, I get this white screen (attached) but can't access my profile by clicking on the name. No icon on the side bar does anything when I click it. The drop down menus look like they will work, but don't seem help either. What am I missing?

Background in case it's not just me: Multiple re-installs with different data and paths.

I downloaded 1.5.3 for x64 from the links here. I use a Win 10 x64 machine and installed it to my chosen directories. I added a profile using minimal info -just my name. The SD card data transferred well and all looked good. After I exited the program, however, I could only access the white screen (attached) with profile listed but had no access to it.

I couldn’t access the profile by clicking it or by clicking anything on the right hand panel. There was no “welcome’ tab or Daily tab etc like before. The drop down File menu offering to import did find the SD card and appeared to import from it but the screen never changed. Is there something else to click?

My chosen directories are deeply nested; so, thinking that the path was too long, I uninstalled and tried again using a shorter path to the directories and different profile name. Same thing-

Then I uninstalled again, downloaded again (whole new file), and deleted any folders that contained remnants I could find of, executables and data from previous efforts. I reinstalled taking defaults and filling out the profile with all new data. Same thing.

Misc background in case it helps: I recently had a USB keyboard issue and had to start in Safe mode using a PS2 KB. I think there may be a software incompatibility somewhere because my other USB devices are fine but new USB KB’s didn’t work either despite good drivers and switching to different USB sockets, (Using a PS2 now). Also, I’m not positive but OSCAR may have been open initially at the time the KB became unresponsive and I needed to shut down using a mouse. If so, I likely didn’t exit the program . MalwareBytes says no problem.

THANKS FOR ANY HELP !!!

Hi DDMzzz! - Welcome
Where did you install the OSCAR-Data directory? If in doubt, Help > About OSCAR > Show data folder.

That location is running up against system security permission rules. You need to set the permission level for this location to, "Everyone". The default location is normally "C:\User\YourUserName\Documents\OSCAR-Data".

RE: Can't access profile or welcome screen unless I reinstall?
Thanks again! I uninstalled and deleted the old data folder and reinstalled with  data going to C:\Users\Admin\Documents\Oscar-Data.

And made a new profile but got the same thing!  UGH !What concerns me now is that this last install didn't even offer the Welcome screen for importing the SD data?   Are there any remnants of files scattered about that I need to delete?

Do I search the Registry for any line that says OSCAR and delete or modify it?
(I have used regedit  if it comes to something like that)

Thanks for your help !

I'm currently on my Linux box and may not be remembering the steps correctly.
  1. Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E).
  2. Navigate to the Documents folder.
  3. Right-click on OSCAR-Data folder, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Security tab, and then click EDIT to open the File Permissions dialog box.
  5. In the File Permissions dialog box, select Add.
  6. Type Everyone in the box, and then click Add.
  7. Set Everybody to have Full Control
  8. Click Done.

RE: Can't access profile or welcome screen unless I reinstall?
Good morning, Red!

This morning I installed OSCAR on different User account on my computer with a new profile etc and that profile imported fine. Smile

This workaround will be more than enough for me; so please feel free to help others and I'll be fine. Thanks

But, in case you want to still work on this issue anyway: There are lots of different settings on my original account -I tweak lots of stuff. The other user account is plain vanilla with all the default settings.  FWIW The help-about menu is not found but the link to the data path works showing that user's Documents folder.

Like I said, I'm good now I'll be able to use this wonderful program. Thank you so much! Smile
