Slept all night but...

RE: Slept all night but...
Sleepster: Thank you for that advice on the data capability. Does that machine work with the software I see some people using (Sleepy Head?). I have no idea what kind of machine they are sending me. The company that did the sleep study (done at home) is NovaSom. The machine they sent for the study was a ResMed Autoset II. For the titration, they sent me a full-face mask but they'd sent the wrong size. Then when they sent the right size, they also sent a nasal mask and chin strap. I never tried the nasal mask. I will when they send me my permanent machine though. I'm glad you are doing well on this journey. It does seem that it will be just that, a journey. But I have to stick with it. I really miss having energy, a memory and thinking power!

Eaglett1111: It seems people like the nasal mask better. I probably should have tried mine while doing the titration study but I'd already started out with the full-face so I thought I should finish with it so as not to throw too many variables into the data. Between my husband and myself (he also just finished a study and has severe OSA) we have around 6 masks! They also initially sent him the wrong size mask so we have 4 full-face and 2 nasals. A woman I work with said her husband has a gel mask. Have you ever heard of that? She said it has no leak problems. She wasn't sure what the brand was.
Thanks again for all of your help, everyone!

Hi Gaspnea. It looks like they set you up with an S8 Autoset II bc the S9 don,t have "II" in the name Just S9 AutoSet. Insist to send you permanent machine an S9 AutoSet (Not S9 Escape or S9 Escape Auto). The S8 is a superseded machine replaced by the S9.

RE: Slept all night but...
I think that I've read that the S8 requires a special memory card reader...if you can switch to an S9, go for it, then you can use any normal card reader that you find on desktop computers and laptops, etc.

I do upload the contents of my S9 memory card and look at the data using the ResScan software to see how things are going. I like to look at the summary graphs and data rather than the detailed ones, just to get a sense of whether I'm staying on the rails. It's a long time between sleep doctor visits (8 months between the last one and the next one), and I can't wait that long to see how I've been doing. Just seems odd to do that. I feel that I need more frequent feedback.

Anyways, I'd suggest that you do try to look at whatever data that you have to see how things are going...it may just be that your body hasn't quite become accustomed to CPAP yet, or it may be that you have leaks that you're not aware of, or something else is occurring. You can get a quick sense of that by looking at data in the form of graphs.

If you're feeling that bad, you can also talk with your sleep specialist (doctor) about it, and see what they think. They might be able to reassure you that this is a normal adjustment period, or that something needs to be changed to get proper treatment.

Hi again. I don't have a gel mask. The one I have was initially a little hard to fit but I realized it was the straps that were the issue. It also helpst to wipe your face and the mask off before bed, especially if you have oily skin. I use baby wipes and they have no smell. Once I got my straps adjusted, I have almost no problems at all. I've never tried any other mask, though, so who knows if something might work better!

There are different software choices out there for different machines. They are all free.

If you get a ResMed machine make sure you get the S9 Autoset or at least the S9 Elite. You should call them and find out which machine they are planning on sending you. Do not accept delivery of anything else.

What kind of machine does your husband have?

RE: Slept all night but...
Hi again Eaglett, zonk, Roger and Sleepster! About straps...one problem I often have is that I can't get the bottom of the mask snug enough because the lower straps are too high on the mask. They are around the level of my upper teeth. So by the time I tighten those straps enough to snug up the bottom of the mask, it's too tight over my nose area. Loosening that screw thing that's on the forehead helps a little but not 100%. I will call the company and request the S9. The titration machine was only picked up for return like 3 hours ago so they haven't even seen my data yet. As for my husband's machine, he was first diagnosed with OSA in 1999 or 2000. I don't remember what kind of machine it was but he used it for like a week and now it sits at the bottom of the closet. The masks back then were pretty painful and leaked like sieves. I remember his pressure was set at 11 and it had a reservoir to put water in it to help with dryness. It didn't help though.
Incidentally, do you know if when they analyze the data from the initial test they can hear things you said while wearing the monitors? The pamphlet said there is a microphone in the breath sensor which presumably records snoring so.....just curious...hahah.

RE: Slept all night but...
From what i hear this is normal. I was DX July 24th and like last night was my longest on the mask 9 hrs 2 min and a 0 AHI but i feel like i barely slept. It takes a while for your body to get adjusted and used to sleeping again. When that day comes for me it's going to be a huge celebration but until then we wait for our bodies to respond. Welcome to another newbie =)

Thanks mystical. I didn't see your post until just now. I guess the website stopped sending me notices at some point. Interesting that you too slept for 9 hrs, no awakenings and still don't feel rested either. Tomorrow is my follow-up with the doctor and I guess I'll be ordering a machine. I actually came on here to find an old post where someone had recommended a certain machine. That's how I saw your post. Sweet dreams!

If it's ResMed, do not accept anything but an S9 model. S8 is an older model and is less capable.

Do not accept an S9 Escape or Escape Auto. Only S9 AutoSET or S9 Elite are acceptable. It will be labeled next to the power button. Remember if it says "Escape" get up and run screaming from the room.

If it's a Respironics, you want one that says "Philips Respironics'. DO not accept the PRS1 Plus or DS150 model. You want one that says "REMstar Pro blahblahblah" or "REMstar Auto blahblah" somewhere near the display.

S9 AutoSet and PRS1 Auto are better choices because they can do everything the Elite or Pro can do plus more.
