[Symptoms] Weird stuff [waking in spasm]

Weird stuff [waking in spasm]
Hey all, I am new to this and I hope to be able to explain what is happening.

When I wake, could be anytime during the night, I wake with what feels like my muscles feeling tense. It feels like when you stretch, it is the best I can explain it. It is from my arms right down to my feet. Should I move, even just raise my arm a little, it will cause my body to feel like I am having some sort of spasms. It causes my whole body to spasm and I feel it especially heavy in my abdomen. If I wake and remember not to move, if I slowly move my hands a little, then my arms, then my legs a little, I won't go in to a spasm. There are times that I cannot stop it because I wake up in a spasm. I am fully aware of what is going on, it lasts like only 10 seconds or so.

I have talked to sleep specialist about this because it seemed to start happening when I started dreaming. I had not had a dream in many years until I started with the CPAP. I dream a a lot now. He thought it could be from REM sleep and then said no. He doesn't know what it is. He did a night time pulse ox done on room air, why i don't know. We knew from the sleep study that my pulse ox goes down in to the 70s during sleep. The resp. therapist thought he was going to do it while using the CPAP. I have not been back to him to get results, I do not see him until November.

About a week ago I fell asleep watching tv for about 45 minutes without the CPAP, went out like a light switch lol, and I actually had a dream. Thing is, I woke up perfectly fine. No issues at all. I told the resp. therapist but will need to tell the doctor when I see him.

I am in afib which they said was caused from the sleep apnea. Went for testing after the afib and found the apnea. I have had 2 cardioversions and 1 time converted to a regular rhythm on my own. But the 4th time the cardiologist told me that I am in it for good.

I do not use any software so I have no reports. The resp. therapist looks at all of that and sends to the doctor. She makes all adjustments on the CPAP. My apnea is actually like 2, minimal leaking is all the resp. therapist tells me. She says everything looks fantastic on the reports. She is surprised with what is going on because my reports are so good, even the doctor agreed with that.

None of this happened prior to the CPAP.

Any ideas what can be going on. I would love to have something to take to the doctor since he really has no idea what is going on. Thanks for any help in advance!

RE: Weird stuff
This did not appear during your sleep study? Did you have a titration study?

Nothing during the sleep study but I only slept a 1/2 hour all night. I don't sleep when away, I told them that but... So then did a home sleep study and that is not as complete.

I was not having them prior to the CPAP.

I do not know what a titration study is?

RE: Weird stuff [waking in spasm]
A titration study is where you go back for a second time and wear a mask hooked to a Cpap along with being wired up.
They then determine the optimal pressure for your apneas.

Some clinics do a "split study", where the first half is wired up where they monitor you for possible Sleep Apnea and other sleep disorders. The second half is wearing a mask with Cpap to determine pressure.

Sounds like you should have had a do over.

Problem is I won't sleep. I slept 22 min the entire night. If I do happen to fall asleep and they wake me, I am done. I believe the doctor is probably thinking the same thing as you are, I need to do another sleep study. I will find out in November. Thank you for your help, greatly appreciated.

Some folks have said their Docs ordered up Ambien so they could sleep during the sleep study.

Would you be allowed to bring anything that would help you feel more comfortable?

It does sound as though you've put the problem in the right hands, namely the doctor.

Proprioception, is the ability to sense your body position, or body parts relative position. When proprioception is impaired, it can lead to the kind of symptoms you describe. Being tired is one cause of this impairment, and there are many other possible causes. In any event, I don't think a sleep specialist is your ticket to a solution. This is more neurological in how you describe it. It may eventually pass spontaneously, or if it continues, I would ask my primary doc or a neurologist for a workup.

They can order something the tech told me when I had the last one done. They are very good and they allow you to bring whatever is needed to help me sleep. The hard part is there were 4 of us there, separate rooms but it is lights out at 10pm. I am up until midnight usually. Didn't help, lol. Thanks for your help!

Wow, ok, interesting. I can ask the doctor about this. I will also google it so I can understand it better! Thank you for your help.
