Very long apnea

Very long apnea
Despite a very good night, last night  ( it looks like I may have found the sweet-spot as far as pressures and EPR go?)

I had one, seemingly very long OA, that lasted something like 47 seconds and  caused a big drop in my blood oxygen level.  (never seen one so long before)

I found this a bit worrying (I can barely hold my breath that long when awake!)  Thinking-about

But I then found an article which suggests this might be a good  rather than a bad sign:

Quote

Oct. 19, 2018─How long a person with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) stops breathing may be a better predictor of mortality risk from
OSA than the number of times they stop breathing, according to new research published online in the American Thoracic Society’s
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Unquote

Length of Each Breathing Disruption in Sleep Apnea May Predict Mortality Risk Better than Number of Breathing Disruptions

Cool

RE: Very long apnea
It could have been that you got "stuck" in a positional apnea where your chin was tucked and your body finally forced its way out of it.  Soft cervical collar could help if you are not already using one.  There are other possibilities also.

I often seem to have a similar type of cluster of events at near the same part of the night.   I have a collar on the way - my first one was uncomfortable and the wrong  size, so I'll be interested to see the result.

I was a bit shocked at the length of the OA - I had no idea they could last so long, and can barely hold my breath for theat long when awake!

Jay, do any doctors believe in positional apnea?  Just curious.  I mentioned it once and the doc looked at me like I had three heads. :Smile  I don't mean increased apneas due to a supine position.  I mean all these chin tucking theories.

RE: Very long apnea
When I was referred to an ENT early in therapy, he recommended trying a soft cervical collar.   He specialized in sleep apnea treatment.  He was the only one who recommended trying it.  RT, PCP, and Pulmonologist never said a word about it.

Through trial and error testing on myself, I have found that I need it every night.  I can chin tuck without it.  For instance, I was cruising at 0.0 AHI on my s9 adapt asv for naps.  I decided to try a nap without it.  20 AHI was the results.  Clusters of O's and H's.  This was using the Evo and Vitera also.

Here at apneaboard members have found solutions by experimentation that the sleep industry does not know.  You may need to educate your Dr.'s on this.
