It is a violation of HIPPA and is something the US government will actually follow up on if you file a complaint. You have a right to a copy of your medical records.

Your CPAP (or other medical device) is not counted towards your on-board carry on allowance.  If you have one carry on bag and one CPAP, they don't count the CPAP.

I would only carry-on your CPAP do NOT check, and tie a ribbon of some kind on the handle and include contact info inside the case.

I asked for both the full sleep study report for each BPAP, and later the ASV, and the prescription for each. The pulmonary doctor's answer to my initial request was that this is something I didn't need. The doc's office I deal with would only permit me to request this via the attached sleep center's staff. I nicely stated that since it was my report I was requesting, and I am allowed by law to obtain them, that I cannot accept no for an answer. The doc changed the answer to wait a few business days so he could be certain he was done studying and creating notes, etc. Later that week, I had my copies of the sleep study summary, full PSG, and script. No charge BTW, as charges for stationary items are allowable in most if not all cases, but most other fees are not. IMO when it comes to your medical records, "NO you can't have a copy" is just an unacceptable answer.

Great advice. IMO best practice is never to check medical equipment.

My non-confrontational solution was just to ask them to fax it to the DME, using my personal fax number, hehe.
btw, the prescription is just the pressure - so all the other settings are things I just need to tweak as needed? Or the DME does that?  For example, ramp time, flex level, rise time, etc?

The prescription is for the device, supplies, and the settings.  
My DME required an Rx for a heated hose (so I purchased one on-line).
