CPAP Treatment and the Risk of Recurrent Cardiovascular Events

CPAP Treatment and the Risk of Recurrent Cardiovascular Events
This post is about a recent medical article in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association titled “Adherence to CPAP Treatment and the Risk of Recurrent Cardiovascular Events A Meta-Analysis”. The findings of the report are that individuals with  obstructive sleep apnea and established cardiovascular disease an who used CPAP for 4 or more hours per day had a significantly lower risk of major adverse cardiac or cerebrovascular events than those who used CPAP less than 4 hours per day. Below is some information about the article and a link to the article.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. The positive effect of CPAP treatment has been demonstrated in reversing the symptoms associated with obstructive sleep apnea, mainly daytime sleepiness. Additionally, CPAP treatment has been associated with a reduction in blood pressure in individuals with hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea. What has been difficult to show is that CPAP therapy is effective in preventing future major cardiovascular events for example heart attacks, stroke, and hospital admission for heart failure

Study findings: The study is a meta-analysis of 3 randomized clinical trials including 4186 patients with individual participant data. The meta-analysis based on intention to treat reported no effect of CPAP treatment. However, those who used CPAP treatment (≥4 hours/day) had a reduced recurrence risk of major adverse cardiac or cerebrovascular events with a significant hazard ratio of 0.69.  I understand this to mean a 31% risk of the events occurring.

I home that there are participants on apneaboard who can provide explanation about the findings
